When it is driven, the Hyundai Elantra N is a fairly simple car to position within its respective segment. We (the Automotive Press) generally give it attributes such as “A Performance Bargain!”, “Lots of car for the price!”, Or “A very surprising performer!”
And that is all completely okay. After all, the Hyundai Elantra N came out of nowhere. And to be honest, it is not as if we have had Elantras for a long time here. Because the car appeared in the early nineties, the lake was seen as a cheaper and more forgotable alternative to what the Japanese sold at the time.

In the meantime, Volkswagen’s Golf GTI/R, Honda’s Civic Si/Type R or Subaru’s WRX/STI has been around for several decades. Heck, even if the GR Corolla is relatively new for the party, the roots will pay back to the golden years of Toyota in WRC.
But the more I hold myself behind the wheel of Hyundai’s Snortin’-N’-Poppin ‘compact Sportsedan, I can’t help it, but acknowledge how good it is. Or do I have to say, fantastic, overperforming and, I dare to say, better than some of his rivals. But nothing prepared me what I noticed when driving with the n back-to-back with a brand new, recently updated Golf GTI. I think it’s time for us to reconsider all who should be the benchmark in this segment.

The Golf GTI is still great, but …
I am not ready to say that the Hyundai Elantra is worthy enough to deduct the Almighty Volkswagen Golf GTI. But I did not expect the Elantra to feel like the more advanced, European alternative to the duo.
I go back to the details around the Elantra N, because I think it is important to underline why the Golf GTI remains the all time of the queen of hot hatchbacks and pocket rockets. Just like the 2025 Golf Ri rated not long ago, this year the MK8 GTI received a whole series of improvements that help improve some of the most annoying errors. Although it is not yet perfect, it helps the car to remain faithful to its original mission.
That mission was always to be all cars for all people, something that the GTI still does better than most of its sports -compact car rivals. To begin with, it is a hatchback, making it considerably more practical than its sedan competitors. It is also just right, giving it blunt proportions and at the same time makes its iconic, two-box design remained recognizable as a GTI.

The GTI is also very German in its execution. Sophisticated. Adult. Complicated and beautifully compiled (although this MK8 has withdrawn a bit in that respect). It also makes exactly the right amount of horsepower and torque (241 hp/273 pound-foot), treats beautifully and remains incredibly simple and affordable to own. It is just one of those sports cars that does what it should do. As soon as it is ready, it becomes tighter and resumes everything it did.
But it also comes with its defects, defects that Hyundai seems to have capitalized with the Elantra N. There is no longer a manual transmission available for the GTI Because of the falling sale, perhaps the most sacrilege decision for a performance model that is so historically important. The infotainment system of the MK8, although enormously improved, remains a hot mess of complicated menus, awkward UX and slowly racking haptic sliding controllers. There are signs of cost -saving in the way the cabin was upholstered, and although it remains a well -sensitive small hatchback, the car is now supplied with a number of annoying cabin rattle when they are driven over the broken stuff.
What the Elantra n does better than the Golf GTI
Of course the Elantra Ni was driving the big TCR edition, a car that is mainly supplied with aero, brake and tire upgrades. These changes simply reveal how brilliant the stock chassis of the Elantra N actually is. And for the price! There is only about $ 2,000 that separate a GTI and an Elantra n, and young, the Hyundai feels like the more focused machine.
What the GTI saves here is that when it is confronted with a clear, blue, over -styled Hyundai, it really remains the more pragmatic model to choose because of its adulthood and usability. But in practice the Elantra N is not exactly an impractical car. I used it to drag children’s furniture around for my son’s new playroom. The Elantra n even carried the balance bike of Magnus around. I know these are relatively small objects, but I was still able to perform my daily dad tasks such as the helm of the Elantra.

What I Real Not expected was how much more focused it is to be a performance car. The Elantra N turns in faster than the GTI, feels considerably more tied up, stiffer and has a much more rock-solid sensation when it is driven by imperfections. Also no cabin rattling. In fact, as far as refinement and refinement went, the Hyundai did better.
And then there are the stuff that makes the wrist of enthusiasts run. The Elantra N still offers a manual transmission, or can be obtained with a double clutch automatically with an eight -speed. There is also more horsepower and torque on tap: 276 hp and 289 pound-foot. And it all feels so much livelier. More energetic, enthusiastic and louder. When pressing a large red button on the handlebar, the exhaust of the Elantra N from Tam goes to noisy little crook, which releases pony, pops and farts. It just has a lot more character.
The Elantra N soon became the car I would rather have driven
It soon became clear to me that, while the Golf GTI remained a jewel of a little hot hatchback, the Elantra n was the better car. It felt so good that if someone had appeared at that time at that time and asked me, “So, which should I buy?”, I would immediately tell them to jump on the Elantra.
So much is offered for the price here, a feeling that the buyer steals something from the automaker. The Elantra N believes that it should cost a few thousand dollars more. It was the car that I would have brought home except without the crazy wing and the stupid n -livrei. Probably also in a tamer color, such as gray or black. But still. “Ingroving” is no longer the qualification that we have to associate with this car. On the contrary, “segment leader” is what we should all say now. Hyundai kills it and Volkswagen makes clear notes.
