Winter weather in the Northeast prompted ground stops at New York’s major airports and Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday.
The ground stop temporarily paused departing flights at their terminal gates, causing lengthy delays for incoming and departing flights.
According to the FAA, the stops at JFK and LaGuardia in New York began around 8 a.m. ET and were expected to be lifted around 10:30 a.m. ET.
According to the FAA, more than a thousand flights to JFK have now been delayed.
“Due to snow or ice, this causes some arriving flights [into JFK] a delay of an average of three hours and 16 minutes, but not more than four hours and 53 minutes,” the FAA said.
As of 9 a.m. Sunday, New York City saw about 3.5 inches of snow, while LaGuardia International Airport reported 2.6 inches of snow, according to The Weather Channel.

According to FOX5, more than 700 flights have been delayed at Philadelphia International Airport.

Newark Liberty International Airport also experienced delays on the ground, with an average delay for flights into the airport of 170 minutes, with maximum delays of 267 minutes.
The winter storm is expected to clear by Sunday afternoon, but temperatures will remain below freezing. There will be a gradual warming throughout the week, with temperatures expected to be in the low 50s on Thursday.
