After registering interest and also teasernya posted earlier this month, a glimpse of Volvo’s new ES90 EV sedan appeared in Bangsar – this photo was taken by our friends at paultan.org himself, Jordan Xavier. However, the sedan is still completely covered in camouflage stickers, with a large ‘PROJ SELAMAT’ written on the side of the body and a license plate that also reads ‘SAFE’.
Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has confirmed that the Volvo ES90 will also be launched in the Malaysian market this month. This ‘SAFE PROJECT’ could be a launch gimmick that will be made for this sedan – Volvo and ‘safe’ are inextricably linked, right?
The launch date, variant and price have not yet been announced, but VCM confirmed that the first 100 customers who order this model by registering from January 2 to March 31, 2026 will receive a 2% incentive.

The ES90 made its world debut in March last year. It’s based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2) platform, but unlike the EX90 which was initially introduced with a 400-volt system and then switched to an 800-volt system last September, this ES90 still gets an 800-volt system to operate.
This allows this sedan to use a DC fast charger up to 350 kW, allowing the battery to be fully charged from 10-80% in 22 minutes and reaching a range of 300 km in just 10 minutes.
For the Malaysian market, VCM stated that the ES90 will continue to be available in a locally assembled version (CKD) with production in Shah Alam. VCM also confirmed that this Malaysian market model will come with a power output of 333 PS and a peak torque of 480 Nm.
The figures show that it is of the Single Motor variant, where only one motor drives the rear wheels, equipped with a 92 kWh NMC battery, which allows it to cover 651 km in the WLTP test cycle and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. In other markets, the ES90 also comes with a choice of Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance variants that are more powerful.

The ES90 is also the first Volvo model to feature Orin’s Nvidia Drive AGX computing system as part of its Superset technology, powering AI functions, safety equipment, vehicle sensors and even the battery management system.
This model was already launched in Thailand in October last year, where the country also received only one variant, the Ultra Single Motor, sold at a price of 2.99 million baht (approximately RM386k) for a model fully imported from China.
Coming straight into the CKD version, the Volvo ES90 can be sold at a competitive price in Malaysia as it continues to receive tax and duty exemptions from the government. How much do you think the selling price will be? Share it with us via the comments section below or on our social pages.
