The trading market is very thin at the moment

Not really a seller’s market

Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin. He was asked about the quiet trade market and if anything would happen, or if too many teams think they are still in it to make a move.

NHL Rumors: The Ottawa Senators may be looking to make a big move

Gord Stellick: “So it’s interesting: We were just joking: Are there going to be deals done? And we don’t know. Now, all of a sudden, what a week for the Calgary Flames? I don’t know if any team was looking for that. They’re going the wrong way to do it there – a bit of a sales thing versus teams that have some injuries.”

Everyone is in the middle of it, like it’s so close that it’s hard to get anything tangible. (Andrei) Svechnikov was another interesting note on Saturday. Whether anything happens or not remains to be seen, but you get the sense that things are really percolating and still quite calm.

Dave Pagnotta: “It’s strange enough with Gord, it’s like there’s both teams, and Calgary has put on the brakes a little bit. Three in a row for them, first time this season. But even before yesterday’s (Sunday) win, they told everyone, yeah, we’re going to keep listening. We’ll get calls, but we’re not ready to do anything yet. We still want to figure out how this season is going to play out.

St. Louis and Nashville, on the other hand, seem to be quite open at the moment. More willingness to have these conversations and make these calls. Coincidentally, the Predators had two of their scouts out the last few games, including their head pro scout at the Montreal games. And St. Louis, as well as Peter Chiarelli, their VP of Hockey Operations, to keep an eye on the Habs as well. So maybe there’s some activity there, but other than the Preds and St. Louis and a few conversations here and there, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much pressing stuff right now.

NHL Rumors: The Anaheim Ducks will not be forced to trade Pavel Mintyukov

Doesn’t seem to belong to anyone; everyone is eager to take another step. Toronto would love to do it. The Canadians are out there. The Oilers continue to poke around a bit. Vancouver is watching. San Jose wants to do both. They want to add something and at the same time are willing to listen to some of their guys. But it seems like no one is rushing to get anything done here.

Maybe that will escalate things even further for Brad Treliving after the Toronto loss. But it’s a semi-status quo in terms of, yeah, teams are still having conversations, exploring and trying to make sure that if something falls into their lap, they’ll jump on it.

But it appears the seller’s market outside of Nashville and St. Louis is relatively thin right now.”
