Jonathan Kuminga certainly feels like the one who came away this season for the Phoenix Suns. At a time when they were reshaping their roster around Devin Booker ā and hiring one of the brightest new head coaches in Jordan Ott ā the Golden State Warriors forward was seen as the perfect young player to team up with Booker and usher in a new era.
It’s time to trade for Kuminga.
However, the Suns can’t complain about why a deal never materialized. The package is reportedly not interesting for a Warriors organization that is doing everything it can to give itself another run at a championship around Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. Kuminga even started the campaign in the starting lineup and all seemed well in San Francisco.

That is no longer the case. Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr – looking for a way to try to right the ship out there – once again relegated Kuminga to a bench role. There are rumors that the 23-year-old once again feels he is being made a scapegoat for the shortcomings of the squad as a whole. He might be right, and the Suns are now in a position to take advantage.
While Kuminga can’t be traded until January 15, Phoenix needs to work the phone now to ensure they can land him when the time comes. Grayson Allen’s emergence as a legitimate game-winning player is key here, his 18.5 points per game easily a career high. He’s making 44.7 percent of his three-point shots, and he’s making 8.8 per night (another high).
Allen has also shown promise as a secondary playmaker in the absence of Jalen Green, while defensively he fits in perfectly with what coach Ott is trying to do. It would be difficult to part ways with him, but this is an opportunity for the Suns to ensure their rebuild around Booker kicks into high gear.
If you think Allen has done well under coach Ott, imagine what Kuminga could do. The prospects of himself, Booker, Green, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams sound ideal because of their two-way potential, while the Suns could also keep Kuminga long-term. How they pay Williams and Collin Gillespie and improve their squad next season, however, is another story.
For the Warriors, Allen could be a Klay Thompson-lite (and we mean very lightweight…) player, with his fit looking ideal alongside what they already have. That wasn’t the case this summer, but Allen has proven he’s ready for a bigger role on a roster that has ideas of winning some series in the playoffs.
The Suns also have players like Oso Ighodaro and Ryan Dunn to add, as well as some second-round picks. That may still sound like enough to land Kuminga, but we now know without a doubt that he has to leave Golden State. With so many other organizations eyeing their own caps ahead of the next offseason, the time has officially come to go all in on landing Kuminga.
