The Tiger Slam Book Review
The tiger that hits
By Kevin Cook
Grade: B
The teacher’s comments: well written, but did the world really need a different book about Tiger? However, I am a good beach.
A whole cottage publication industry originated around Tiger Woods. I started counting the available books on Amazon and gave up for sixty. Who knows how many others are out of pressure and therefore not on the e-commerce site.
At the moment I think that the only books that are not written about Tiger are on his tailors and choices in the kitchen.
Yet they have to sell because publishers continue to pay and print authors.
All of this, Kevin Cook’s “The Tiger Slam” is a well-written, very detailed, stroke-by-stroke report of Tiger’s four consecutive Majors Streak of 2000-2001. If you don’t know anything about that remarkable Golf of Golf because you are too young, or have forgotten some details because you are too old (I fall into this category), it is a good assignment course.
It is also a good ‘beach reading’. I ended it in an afternoon in the Lake Cottage in Noord -Michigan when the threat of thunderstorm kept me from going to the golf course. Take this out for an afternoon in the sand on Myrtle Beach, and you’re done.
One of the things I had forgotten was how close Bob May had come to win the 2000 PGA. I also did not remember that Phil Mickelson and David Duval were in the fight until the last holes at the Masters 2001. Whether Duval took an eight to play himself from the opening of the road hole. It was nice to follow those tournaments again.
The US Open from 2000 was not that interesting, because it was actually non-competitive. For me, sport is the most interesting when the outcome to the end doubts (even if none of these doubts was because they have already happened).
Cook is doing well to the play-by-play with comments from other players, Caddies and coaches. It sorts a few questions and clarifies the moments.
I really enjoyed the earlier work of Cook – Tommy’s honor – and while The tiger that hits Does not add that volume, it is still a worthy addition to his oveure. I look forward to his next book.
