If you look like me, you probably have a box of baking powder tucked away in your pantry. Maybe you use it for baking, cleaning or deodorizing the refrigerator. I recently did a deep dive and discovered that baking powder actually has a number of pretty impressive health benefits. It is perhaps even one of the most overlooked wellness tools there are.

I started experimenting with baking powder (aka sodium bicarbonate) as part of my wellness routine. The results have been fascinating so far. Baking powder has various advantages, from improving energy and endurance to supporting the pH balance and even sleep. This modest ingredient may have much more to offer than we give credit.

This article investigates what I have learned, what science has to say and how I use baking powder in my daily routine.

Why baking powder is important for your body

Baking powder is not just for baking cookies (although they are delicious!). It is a natural connection that is already found in our body and plays a key role in maintaining the balance of acid or pH. Our pH of the blood is tightly regulated between 7.35 and 7.45, and our bodies work hard to keep it in that reach. Sometimes even minerals from bones or other tissues pull to maintain the balance.

This is where baking powder enters. It works like a buffer to neutralize excess acids in the body. Modern life throws a lot at us and can encourage us to be more acidic, including intense exercise, stress, processed foods and even infections. Support for the natural buffer system of the body can help restore the balance. And as I have found, it can also improve how we feel and function daily.

Breathe

What fascinated me most is how baking powder interacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen delivery. We often hear about the importance of getting enough oxygen, but CO2 plays a crucial role to ensure that oxygen actually enters our tissues. Through a process called the Bohr effect, higher CO2 levels help red blood cells to release oxygen where needed. These include places such as your brain, muscles and mitochondria (the energy factories of the cell).

Many of us are unintentionally breathable, breathable too superficial, too fast, or usually through the mouth. This lack of air intake can then lower the CO2 levels and influence the oxygen delivery. Baking powder supports the CO2 balance, which in turn can help improve the energy, focus and endurance.

Baking powder for energy and endurance

One of the first things that attracted my attention when investigating baking soda was how it was used in the athletic world. It was once even banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as a performance-enhancing substance. Studies show that baking powder can prevent fatigue and improve endurance. However, it is no longer forbidden because it is a natural, common substance.

After intense exercise lactic acid builds up in the muscles, causing that well -known burning sensation and ultimately fatigue. Baking powder buffers this acid to delay muscle fatigue. A meta-analysis from 2013 in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research confirmed these results. They discovered that supplementing with baking soda improves high intensity exercises in top athletes in the short term.

However, you don’t have to be a top athlete to experience positive effects of baking powder!

Mitochondria, oxygen and pH balance

In addition to athletic benefits, the effects of baking powder go much deeper, even to a cellular level. Our mitochondria thrive in a very narrow pH range and need a good oxygen delivery to make ATP (energy). By helping to balance CO2 and PH, baking powder can help stimulate mitochondrial efficiency for more permanent energy.

When I first started experimenting, I noticed more clearly, more stable energy and improved training repair. Personally, I feel that it is worth paying attention, especially because this is one of the cheapest wellness tools that is there.

Inflammatory and immune support

You may not think about immune health when you think of baking powder, but it might deserve a place next to your elderberry syrup.

A study from 2018 in the Journal of Immunology Discovered that sodium bicarbonate activates anti -inflammatory routes through the spleen. It seems to shift the balance of immune cells, reduce pro-inflammatory macrophages and increasing anti-inflammatory T cells.

The same study also showed some proof that baking powder can reduce inflammatory cycles in those susceptible to car -immune diseases. It can even support the Vagus nerve, which is the key for calming the nervous system. If someone who has treated car -immune problems in the past, it is something that I try to keep at a distance.

Although human research is still limited, I have discovered that when I consistently take baking powder, I feel calmer and less inflamed. This is just my own experience, but the science it supports is promising.

Kidney and digestive support

Medical experts have been using baking powder in specific situations for years. Doctors sometimes prescribe to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the acid load of the body. A study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology showed that it delayed kidney and the need for dialysis in some patients.

It is also a well -known quick solution for incidental stomach acid or acid reflux because it neutralizes stomach acid. However, I do not often recommend using this. In the long term we want to support health heartburn, not unnecessarily reduce.

Some people also use baking powder to alkalize urine and discourage bacterial growth in urinary tract infections (UTIs). I had friends used this in a pinch while traveling, and it worked surprisingly well for them.

Better support for sleep and stress

Another baking powder that surprised me was how it can help with sleep and relaxation. Research suggests that it can increase the production of nitrogen oxide, which improves blood flow. Drinking a little in water during the day is linked to better sleep quality and fewer bathroom trips at night.

I use baking powder baths for years to help with detox, especially combined with Epsom salts. A 20 -minute soak is really relaxing, supports detox and reduces stress. Many of the studies into the benefits of baking powder used it as part of a warm bath.

Oral health benefits

One of the more popular and well -known applications, baking powder is great for oral care. Baking powder is already a popular ingredient in natural toothpaste because it helps alkalize the mouth and whiten teeth. It can help reduce the acidity in the mouth and support a healthy oral microbiome.

How I use baking powder

Although I focus on movement and sports, I am not a top athlete who takes huge doses. Some athletes work up to tablespoons at the same time, which can cause digestion if you are not careful. What I do is much more modest, about ½ teaspoon in water once or twice a day. Sometimes I add an extra dose for training. So far I have noticed better endurance, faster recovery and less muscle pain.

Here is more about how I use baking powder in my daily routine

  • Oral– I drink ½ teaspoon of baking powder in water on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before breakfast. Sometimes I take a ½ teaspoon halfway through the afternoon or pre-workout, especially on training days with high intensity.
  • Bathe – A mix of Epsom salts and baking powder for 20 minutes in a warm bath. This feels really good on days when I have been more active or stressed!
  • Oral care – de natural toothpaste I use baking powder every day.

A few precautions

Although baking powder is of course and cheap, more is not always better. High doses can cause nausea, bloating or diarrhea. People with certain health problems, especially kidney or heart problems, must first talk to their care provider.

If you want to try it, start small and see how your body reacts. A small amount can have a surprisingly great effect. And yes, it tastes salt and not particularly pleasant in water. I sometimes add a dash of lemon juice or a pinch of sea salt to make it tastier.

I also ensure that I remove this from meals, because baking powder can temporarily reduce stomach acid and I want strong stomach acid for digestion.

Last thoughts about the benefits of baking powder

Baking powder is perhaps one of the most underestimated wellness tools there are. By supporting the PH balance, CO2 levels and mitochondrial function, it can all improve energy, endurance and even sleep -all for only money per day.

As always, you must do your own research before you start a new supplement. It is also a good idea to start small and listen to your body. This simple addition has been a game changer for my energy, training repair and even mental clarity. And the best thing is that it is probably already in your pantry!
