Stop me if you’ve heard this before: A car company plans to replace its beloved sports car with an electric car, but is reconsidering after a market slowdown. Porsche tried it with the 718 Boxster and Cayman. Now Alpine may follow suit.
The successor to the iconic A110 sports car, which was originally only going to be electric, may now be joined by a combustion engine version, namely a hybrid. In an interview with UK EvoAlpine CEO Philippe Krief hinted that the next-generation sports car could be available in both electric and gas-powered hybrid variants.
Krief didn’t provide a clear explanation for the change in strategy, but given the recent slowdown in demand for electric vehicles and the tepid response to electric sports cars, the move isn’t exactly surprising.
Krief says the new A110 – offered in both hybrid and fully electric versions – is expected to go on sale in early 2027. It will be available as a two-seater coupe, as a convertible and even as a 2+2 configuration with a rear seat. He also teased that “the design of the new one will make the current car look old.”
Although a new sports car with a combustion engine from Alpine is exciting in itself, the EV version should be no slouch either. The electric coupe will feature a dual-motor, rear-wheel drive setup, with more than the 464 horsepower currently available in the A390 SUV. A custom battery pack will also be used, with a target weight of less than 3,000 pounds.
Alpine also aims to make the battery pack fully replaceable, so owners can upgrade to newer batteries over time and avoid degradation in the long term. When it hits the market, Alpine hopes the electric A110 will compete against Porsche’s upcoming electric 718 Boxster and Cayman.
