Each week, GOLF.com staff reviews a product (apparel, shoes, gear, accessories) that we recently tried in an effort to bring you, our dear reader, an honest, no-nonsense look at the latest and greatest in golf.

Over the past year, the I Tried It section has covered a range of cool products from our writers and editors, from a ninja-inspired divot repair tool and tech-heavy boots to mini drivers and Tour-approved training aids.

But there was one review that stood out in terms of reader popularity: Game Improvement Editor Maddi MacClurg’s experience with Callaway’s Apex Ti Fusion irons, published in April.

Let me start by saying that I am not a gearhead. Until two weeks ago, I was probably the exact opposite.

When it came to golf equipment, I lived by the old saying, “a poor craftsman blames his tools.” Always convinced that if I didn’t hit well, it was my fault and not the clubs’ fault.

It turns out I was wrong.

For the past ten years I have been using the same set of irons I suited up for in college. And for a long time they did their job, or so I thought. That is until I got my hands on a brand new set Callay Apex from fusion irons.

The moment I opened the box and excitedly pulled the plastic off, these bats made me dizzy. It was that Christmas morning excitement that you just can’t fake.

At first glance I liked the sleek black design. It made me feel like I was holding a weapon. I couldn’t get to a simulator fast enough.

And with one swing, they had completely shattered my very stubborn, long-standing mindset about golf equipment.

The titanium face and forged hollow body construction gave me effortless power with every shot. It felt like the ball exploded out of the face. Within a few minutes of hitting these irons, I was carrying the ball 10 to 15 yards longer and creating more ball speed than ever with my old set.

I also noticed my shot spread was tighter. When the occasional shot off center crept in, it still looked and felt good. While these clubs are forgiving, I love that they are still quite workable. I can shape shots with ease, controlling both the trajectory and direction of my ball flight.

Although an iron isn’t really tested until you hit it after a few hard lies. So after hitting this one from some vague places, I can officially say I’m impressed.

They cut through thick, juicy rough like a hot knife through butter. Fairway bunkers were a piece of cake, and I could even hit my ball out of a grass field while handling it on the course with no problem.

With these irons in the bag, I feel more confident in my game than before – and for the first time in a long time, I actually feel like practicing.
