Tiger Woods, Burj Al Arab, Dubai, March 2, 2004

In sport there are times that fade the border between spectacle and competition, when an athlete goes beyond the usual arenas of playing and entering a stage where performance becomes a piece of theater.

Such a moment came in the spring of 2004, when Tiger Woods, already the most recognizable figure in Golf and probably in sport, was high above Dubai and golf balls from the hotel hit the roof of the only Zevenstars hotel in the world.

Caught by the lens of the world’s leading Golffotographer David Cannon, has held the image one of the most striking promotional recordings in modern sport.

The setting was just as dramatic as unlikely. The Burj Al Arab, a sail -shaped miracle of Engineering, rises more than 300 meters above the Arabian Gulf, its helicopter on the roof a disk that apparently is suspended in the air.

Not built as a Golf -T shirt, but as a landing platform for helicopters, at least it became the driving range of a golfer for a day. Woods, who prepared for the 2004 Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club, was invited to participate in this publicity event to mark his appearance at the tournament.

With the sea breeze that cuts the helicopter and the skyline of the city that stretched into the desert, the scene was both surreal and symbolic.

Woods, in his athletic prime at the age of 28, was more than just a competitor; He was the face of global wave. His swing, in the practice of practice and fairways worldwide, now found an unlikely background: 700 feet above the water, not a gallery of fans in sight, only the enormous vastness of the sky and sea to see the flight of the ball.

The photo of David Cannon freezes this marriage and spectacle. In it, Woods is in the middle of waving, balanced and compiled, his figure overshadowed by the scale of the helicopter and yet the scene recommends with the power of his presence.

The geometry of the shot, the circular pillow, the sharp lines of the hotel architecture and the endless horizon framed Woods and both athlete and icon.

For Dubai, the moment was also symbolic for the growing ambition. In the early 2000s, the Emirate invested heavily in Golf as part of his global sports portfolio.

Hosting the Desert Classic Drew Elite players, but a stunt like this increased the event to the headlines far beyond the sports pages.

Woods, no. 1 in the world, who took pictures of one of the most photographed buildings in the world, created a direct picture that not only spoke about golf, but also about the rising status of Dubai.

Almost two decades later the photo retains its resonance. It is a memory of the way sport can transcend its limits, how a simple action, a golf ball touches, can be converted into a symbol of daring, glamor and worldwide reach. For Tiger Woods it was one of the many memorable moments in a career defined by records and titles.

For Cannon it was proof of the power of photography to turn an assignment into a sustainable icon. And for Golf it was a day when the game literally rose above the track.
