The Specialty Griffins

The Specialty Griffins

It has been a long time since the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL wore the logo to the left, but the IHL logo they wore always appealed to me. The new logo that they now wear in the AHL is proud and more aggressive, but there was something royal to the IHL logo. I say this because the Griffins will wear a handful of different logos this season thanks to the schedule of the specialty Jersey. We mentioned this last night The Hockey ShowBut I think there should be a more complete look at the six sweaters that the Griffins will wear this season. Let us dig in those sweaters to determine good, bad and apathetic figures.

November 14: Military appreciation

There is nothing overly exciting about these sweaters, but a few people on socially mentioned that the “US” logo has been re -designed to contain the “grg” looks a bit like the word “gag”. I cannot say that I am a fan of this based on celebrating the military complex, but they work as a red-white and blue sweater to honor the men and women of the army.

Opponent: Toronto Marlies
Figure: Flour

December 13: Red Kettle Game

For a “Red Kettle” game to support the Salvation Army while I collected funds to support people in need in Kent County, I expected the sweater to be a little more red. The overwhelming amount of black feels like an easy out for Jersey design, so it loses points there. Why couldn’t they turn red and green in terms of the holiday colors?

Opponent: Rockford Icehogs
Figure: Bad design, but charity

December 21: Hat Tricks and Hoops Night

This is perhaps one of the best crossover sweaters I have seen, and I am not a fan of sports crossovers at all. I think I like this because it is fairly simple, but it catches the 1995-2001 logo and colors of Detroit Pistons So good. Having fun with sweaters is something I can endorse! Full points for the Griffins for making this sweater great!

Opponent: Cleveland Monsters
Figure: Good (and fun)

January 17: Old Time Hockey

Because the Griffins were located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1996, there is really not much “old time hockey” from which they can draw. That said, this fauxback is pretty solid with its cream-colored accents and the Faux Retro logo. I would like to see that the IHL sweaters return, but I can live with these sweaters.

Opponent: Milwaukee Admirals
Figure: Good

February 15: City Connect

Although I do not understand why the Griffins are taking an NBA theme, it is even more confusing if you find out that February 15 is already “Sensory & Support Night” planned with a giveaway of a wall flag. These City Connect sweaters are not even advertised on the schedule, so I wonder why the Griffins put all this together that day. In any case, there is not much enthusiastic about this.

Opponent: Texas Stars
Figure: Flour

March 13: Purple Community Game

This is one of those sweaters that needs some explanation. The purple community is a group that focuses on connecting individuals who are passionate about combating cancer and other neurodegenerative diseases. The purple game is all about the consciousness of cancer and the collection of funds about the From Andel Institute What does all kinds of biomedical research. That is clearly a very good thing, and the Griffins go a few steps further, because fans can also enjoy purple concessions and graphics all night. The sweater is not that impressive in its overall aesthetics, but the cause is definitely worth it.

Opponent: Milwaukee Admirals
Figure: Meh, but charity

In the end, the Griffins will wear two good sweaters, three Meh Jerseys and a bad sweater according to my standards. Again, I think the sweaters that support charities should be emphasized because they will be auctioned to help those causes, but a few of these sweaters feel that they were unnecessary. In any case, all these sweaters will be auctioned in post-game auctions through the Griffins, so I hope that the Salvation Army and the Van Andel Institute will leave with a pile of money! If they have an online auction, I can take a run with one of those pistons or faux retro jerseys for myself!

What do you think of these six sweaters – good, bad or meh? Let me know in the comments and we can discuss each of them!

Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
