The wicketkeeper-batsman further spoke about how the team members had to come up with their own ways to get over the disappointment, with the Aiden Markram-led side falling just seven runs short. None of the teammates really discussed the elephant in the locker room, at least until De Kock announced his now reversed retirement.
To be honest, after that day we just forgot about it, in all honesty. I don’t think any of us really wanted to talk about it. Everyone went home and went through their own process of how to deal with it. We didn’t have to talk about it as a team. That’s pretty much it. We never actually talked about it. I don’t think I’ve been to the team since, not much, so probably yes, but I’ve only been a member for a few months. So as far as I know that’s all that happened,” he revealed during the pre-match press conference on Saturday.
The cook boasts a strong record against India, especially in the shortest format of the game. In just 15 innings against the Men in Blue, the Pretoria native has 507 runs to his name at an impressive average of 42.25 and a strike rate of over 150. He also has six half-centuries, two of which came during the five-match series in December 2025. De Kock is expecting a good match on Sunday with assistance to the batters.
“Yes, I just think in general when we play against India and India comes to us, we generally always play on good wickets. And India is known for its high scoring countries. So I guess you can take that as a positive note. Obviously there have been some good high scores in Ahmedabad lately, but in saying that another play – obviously the pass – said it’s a high scoring ground but you never know what happens tomorrow so yeah, we’ll just have to see how it goes and just play it by ear. Hopefully at the end of the day we will score more points than the Indian team,” he said.
The two sides will face each other again in the Super Eights match on February 22 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The two teams had also played a warm-up match earlier, but this time everything is on the line and any mistakes could prove extremely unpleasant later on.
