This is a small left -wing field, but everyone who loves football statistics and records is turning in the long -awaited big Tome of Ian Laschke. Some perhaps remember his Rothmans Book of Football League records from 1980, a groundbreaking publication that mentioned all the results and competition tables from the start of League Football in 1888. The book, although extensive, had a somewhat homemade feeling because the data was written by hand, undoubtedly by Laschke’s own fair hand. This new book confirms that this version is the one who wanted to produce Laschke in 1980.

It is good to see that this work was finally produced with the help of modern techniques and it will certainly become a valuable reference source for historians and writers, among others. The record section is convincing, in particular the performances from season to season of League Champions, which confirms that the modern game has much larger squadrons to call.

When the first book by Laschke was published, football was not in a good place and the heritage was not looked particularly good. The crowd fell (in 1979 the top flight average had fallen by a further 4.4% to 27,428), crowd of violence had given the average fan a bad name and England had not given itself eligible for two consecutive world cups. English clubs had won the European Cup on a more positive note in 1977, 1978 and 1979. In general, however, there was an atmosphere of gloom about the sport.

Fortunately, football has recovered for all its mistakes and it has grown out of all proportions. Laschke’s great work is a memory that football did not start with Gazza, Italia ’90 and the Premier League. They are anorak things, but just open it and you are deepened.

English League Football – The Complete Record by Ian Laschke, is published by Mount Vernon Publishing.
