The Red Sox Single-A Affiliate Rebrand

Yesterday, the Salem Red Sox, Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in the Carolina League, unveiled its new name and look. From now on, the Salem Red Sox will be called the Salem Ridge Yaks.

The Ridge Yaks held a gender reveal party of sorts in their stadium. The scoreboard stood in the center of the stage with the new logo (and name) projected onto it.

The new name, look and mascot celebrate the region’s outdoor adventure, community pride and connection to the Blue Ridge Mountains. But what is the connection between a cow-like animal, which lives in the Himalayas and Mongolia, and baseball? Well, yak is short for kayak, and kayaking is one of the outdoor activities you can do in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But most of all, yak is slang for home run (you learn something every day).

According to the Salem Ridge Yaks website, “the design, colors, fonts and symbols have been carefully created to embody the heritage and heart of Salem. The yak personifies the strength, resilience and hardworking spirit found within our players as well as in the agricultural roots of Southwest Virginia. The mountain ranges and pine trees in the yak’s hairline represent the Blue Ridge Mountains and landscapes that form the backdrop of Salem Memorial Ballpark.”

That hairline is a very well thought-out part of the rebranding. If you look at the secondary logo in the bottom right, you’ll see the identical look of those mountains and the hairline of the yak in the primary logo.

“Each color in the new identity was carefully chosen to ensure it carries a meaningful and symbolic connection to the team. The navy and energy blue represent the beauty of the Blue Ridge, while the gold pays tribute to the beautiful sunsets, inspired by the gold accents in the city of Salem Seal. The iconic red is inspired by the Boston Red Sox and embodies the energy and spirit of baseball,” said Salem Red Sox General Manager Allen Lawrence.

Some of the merchandise is available in the Ridge Yaks webshop. Some of the few caps available cost as much as $48.00, pretty high if you ask me.

This cap is the alternative cap of the Ridge Yaks. It’s fun, but not $48.00 fun.

The jerseys are reasonably priced at $95.00. There are three types of jerseys: a royal blue, a navy blue and a white (probably) home jersey.

A nice twist on these sweaters is the different color scheme at the bottom of the sleeves.
