The brokerage associations and many real estate companies prefer to use photos of people in the twenty and thirty in their advertising and recruitment material.

When you see the photos, you can assume that most brokers are young and wear suits.

Screenprint of data from the National Association of Realtors

The photos are lies. The median era of brokers is 57 years old. That means that half of us are older than that, and half are younger. Only 12% of the brokers are younger than 39. Yup, that is correct, only 12% and the rest is more than 40.

When the elderly are depicted, they are almost always male, but 63% of the brokers are female, and that is a decrease of 65% last year.

There is no discrimination at the age of work, but I get the impression that real estate companies and associations prefer younger members. In fact, they made extra effort for a while to recruit younger members for leadership positions. Many of those leaders are now older than 50.

It is quite unusual for someone to become a broker directly outside the university. Most have had a career for real estate. I used to be a business analyst, project manager and consultant. Before that I worked for Metro Transit in the IT department of the maintenance division. I received a permit to sell real estate in 2002 and became a recognized broker in Minnesota in 2007.

Most sellers of real estate work on the basis of 100% committee, which is why new agents are older than younger.

There are some advantages to be older. Experience is important. I just wish our broker associations would embrace the idea that it is not only ok to be old, but that older people may simply be better brokers.
