The Phoenix Suns have officially wrapped up preseason play, going 3-1 in a pair of games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. The tuning games are used excellently by head coach Jordan Ott to get a feel for this roster and his eventual rotations, even if two of his starters, Mark Williams and Jalen Green, are unavailable to him.
Despite this, a number of Suns will raise their hands for a few more minutes once the action really gets going. Perhaps sensing there is more depth in The Valley than previously thought, coach Ott rested all of his starters in the final preseason game against the Lakers, allowing his bench and three rookies to propel the team to victory.
Suns now have two point guards who have proven they can start.
Perhaps the most significant development since the opening of training camp — outside of rookie center Khaman Maluach appearing to be ahead of schedule — has been the Suns’ apparent ability to add a pair of point guards to this roster who are both capable of reaching more than third. Right now, Devin Booker is the starter, while backup Collin GIllespie has clearly made strides.

But Coach Ott started both Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler in the second win over the Lakers, and the results were incredibly encouraging. The overlap between their skills was clear: neither got in the other’s way and both thrived in different ways. Butler in particular is playing like a man who knows his professional career is on the line, and he erupted for 35 points in the win.
Goodwin finished with 24, the two highest totals for the team. They also combined for 15 assists, while the rest of the starters had three. So while the conventional thinking was that the Suns would eventually drop one of these two as their roster evolved, both are proving to be too valuable to let go.
They move the ball at the right times, while also knowing when to grab their own ball. It’s almost ironic that both players – but Butler in particular – seem like the perfect foil for Booker. You could say that not since Chris Paul has the 28-year-old had a point guard so able to put him on the tee and play off him while also scoring, and now two more have been added.
With Jalen Green set to miss at least the first week or so due to a hamstring issue, the front office has done a great job this season of making sure there are quality players who can replace him while he’s gone. Goodwin was the known commodity that everyone knew could help if the team was short-handed, while Butler was one of the finds of the summer. What a big problem to have right now.
