The men of Berkel and Rodenrijs played their first home game in the Promotion League on Sunday. The club experiences a dream year in their jubilee year, but also temperes expectations for the coming years. The culture Is more important with the South Hollanders than performance. They did everything they could to turn the first home game into a big party, but opponent Ring Pass threw a key by winning 4-3.
Berkel en Rodenrijs had done the possible last Sunday to attract as many people as possible to exercise park High Land. There were flyers with the names and heads of all players of Ladies 1 and Men 1, a DJ provided the atmosphere all afternoon and after the men’s game that even played a saxophonist. The club had reason enough to party: this season, Heren 1 is playing in the Promotion League for the first time and the first home game was the time to celebrate.
Board member Sjors Driegen visibly enjoyed the ambiance. “It may not be as special as honoring the championship during the anniversary celebration, but it is still great that we are now participating in the promotion class.” Last year the men surprised by taking the title in the transition class, which resulted in promotion to the second level. The fact that the club was exactly fifty years old at the time made it extra special. “We are probably not going to surpass that, but this is another great milestone for our family club.”

The bond between men 1 and the club
That Berkel and Rodenrijs is a club with a lot of connection is proven by the first team. “There are currently ten players in Heren 1 who coached or coached with a junior team,” said Stefan van der Ree, coach and former player of the first team. ‘We would also like that, because that’s how you keep the bond between club and player strong. It is important for us to have a stable basis, because that is the only way we can continue to perform as a club. ‘
Berkel wants to keep that culture. But Captain Teun Mooldijk is mainly thinking of the short term. ‘I want to continue playing hockey at all costs at all costs. We have come here now and we are going to do everything to stay in. ‘

Wrong choices and unnecessary cards
Berkel could have taken the right step in the direction of a good season that ended against Ring Pass on Sunday. A game that started as you expect from a competition between two newly promoted teams: full of energy, but with the necessary carelessness. The game went all kinds of. After eleven minutes it was already 1-1. The decision came after the break, when Ring Pass rose to 2-4 by goals from Remko Saraber and Mattijn Triezenberg. That made the third goal of Mooldijk and Van Berkel and one for the statistics. It also did not help that the home team received green and two yellow cards in that final phase.
Mooldijk was then visibly disappointed. “It is such an incredible shame that you lose in this way. We may have played our best game against these guys in preparation, and today we have not reached that level. Such an observation is extremely frustrating. ‘Consequently, he could not really enjoy the festivities. “Some can switch a lot easier, but I will probably be Balking for the rest of the day.”
Van der Ree saw that his team sometimes focused too much on the opponent. ‘It seemed that there was too much tension, so we made the wrong choices. We have picked up unnecessary cards and lost control in phases. This is immediately punished at this level. Where we could have a smaller period without consequences last year, we now immediately pay the price. ‘
