Over the past few months, the name of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been circulating in the rumor mill. Given how the season has gone, most NHL insiders and analysts have suggested they could look to sell at the trade deadline.
One player in particular who has been involved trade rumors are Bobby McMann. He is considered their most valuable trading asset. In recent days, however, it appears things are changing, and McMann may not be treated after all.
McMann may not be signed by the Maple Leafs
McMann’s future largely depends on how the Maple Leafs perform leading up to the trade deadline. If things go wrong, there’s a good chance he’ll be moved along with a handful of others. However, if they remain in the mix and close to a playoff spot, they may opt to keep him as a loan player of their own. Then they could push for a wildcard position.
The Leafs are reportedly not ready to make a decision yet. Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports this”It’s amazing how many teams have told me in the last 24 hours how important the upcoming games are over the weekend, before they’ve set their deadline plans. There’s not much wiggle room there.” Toronto could be one of the clubs waiting.
If the Leafs aren’t a seller, they’ll likely keep the forward. Alternatively, if he is willing to get a haircut at his request, he can get an extension.
McMann has been open about his love for Toronto and his desire to stay and be a part of this team. It wouldn’t be surprising if they seriously considered keeping him for what he brings. He can slide into the top six and score 20 to 25 goals in a season. He’s the type of player you only move when absolutely necessary. The ideal scenario would be to keep him around for a playoff push. Then they can work towards a new deal in the offseason.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t always matter when a team is struggling and considering change. In McMann’s case, though, he’s such a useful player that all 31 other NHL teams would likely be interested. That’s not an asset the Maple Leafs want to give up lightly. But if redesign is the direction they choose, they should think about it.
