The most practical and balanced Harley you can buy right now

If you want to take a long ride on America’s highways, a Harley-Davidson is the solution. They’re built for the long haul and have all the conveniences you could want, plus some conveniences you never would have thought of in a million years. You could ride one of the Harley tourers for days, going from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and you’d be fresh enough to go right back.

But all this long-distance power makes them big, heavy and thirsty – not to mention the fact that they cost as much as a small car. Even if you’re looking at the premium cruisers, you better have a lot of cash on hand, especially if you plan to splurge on accessories. Humor aside, wouldn’t it be great if there was a Harley that gave you all the pride of the badge and the ownership experience, but without the drawbacks?

Fortunately, Harley has been working on this problem for a while and has a solution. It has products that are affordable to purchase, easy on the pocket at the gas and gas stations and agile enough to be used as a daily driver. Here’s the most practical and well-balanced Harley you can buy right now.

The Nightster Special is the most practical and balanced Harley you can buy right now

There are two changes we need to discuss to understand the Nightster Special. The first took place in 2021, when Harley-Davidson completely broke with tradition and debuted a Sportster with a trellis frame and a liquid-cooled, high-revving engine. This is a smaller, more affordable Sportster, and this makes it a great motorcycle for the average person, not just a fan of the brand.

In fact, the total change from the previous Sportster series may not go down well with fans of the traditional products manufactured by HD. The other change happened recently, when the brand corrected prices to make its products good value. This modernity and practicality are exactly what makes the Harley-Davidson Nightster Special the most practical and balanced Harley you can buy today.

The base MSRP will be less than $13,000 in 2025

The Nightster is the most affordable Harley available today, priced at less than $10,000. That’s a very attractive price, but it gives you a minimalist product when it comes to features. The Nightster Special offers a few things above the base Nightster for the extra $2,500 it costs.

Those things would be essential for any brand other than The Bar And Shield, and the investment is worth it, especially when combined with the standard safety features. The Nightster Special is the kind of motorcycle you can ride anywhere, anytime, which is why it’s our pick.

The Nightster Special is powered by the Revolution Max 975T engine. This is the smaller of the two displacements in the Revolution Max range and focuses on torque, which is why the ‘T’ is in the name. This has variable valve timing on the intake valve and is fully liquid-cooled. It’s also a short-stroke, high-compression design (97x66mm and 12.0:1), so modern in every sense of the word. This is further evidenced by the by-wire throttle, driving modes and traction control system.

The Nightster offers a six-speed gearbox as standard, unlike competitors like the Scout Sixty. There is no quickshifter, but drag-torque slip control is available. As with all Harley cruisers, a belt drives the rear wheel.

This is the other big change from the Evolution-powered Sportster series that the current generation replaced: the chassis is a trellis frame that uses the engine as a stressed member. This makes it difficult to customize the Nightster Special compared to a traditional bassinet frame, but accessories are available from the factory to make your Nightster Special unique.

Suspension consists of Showa front forks with twin flexion valves at the front and twin outboard shocks at the rear that help reduce seat height. The rear units have an adjustable preload. The wheels are a size combination of 19/16 inches, which should provide stability at speed. The brakes are single disc at both ends, but they are Brembo units and ABS is standard.

Compact dimensions make the Nightster practical

The Nightster Special weighs 483 pounds ready to ride. The seat is only 70cm above the floor when loaded, and this is a narrow motorcycle because it has a V-twin engine. Harley has further optimized weight distribution by placing the fuel tank under the seat, centralizing mass and keeping the bike’s behavior consistent whether the tank is full or nearly empty.

Special features of Harley-Davidson Nightster

The Nightster Special adds some very useful features to the basic Nightster. You have to add two and a half large extras, but you get a round 4-inch TFT screen with Bluetooth and navigation, cruise control and a tire pressure monitoring system. Lest we forget, the passenger seat and footpegs are standard on the Nightster Special.

The seating position is also slightly different, because the handlebars have 5 inch risers. There are also a few other subtle differences in the visual elements between the two Nightsters: the Special has the headlight cowl, the tank graphics are different, the wheels are always white, and the exhaust heat shield is always black.

There are only two real competitors to the Nightster Special. The first is a product of another American motorcycle manufacturer. The Scout Sixty is India’s entry-level model and it is a more traditional cradle frame cruiser. However, to get the Nightster Special’s features, you’ll need to upgrade to the Sport Scout Sixty Limited, which will cost you $12,699. That’s more money than the Nightster Special, and you get less power and torque, a five-speed gearbox and a lot more weight.

That leaves us with the Honda Rebel 1100. This one is really well priced, and for $10,399 you can spec it with the dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This significantly increases usability. It now also has a 5-inch rectangular TFT screen with Bluetooth and navigation as standard. The downsides are that if you don’t want anything other than a V-twin, this isn’t one. It’s the next best thing: a 270-degree parallel twin that’s completely unloaded. Furthermore, it offers no safety other than ABS, making the Nightster Special look like a real bargain!
