Minnesota Timberwolves Second -year guard Rob Dillingham is ready for a greater role in this coming season. Although Dillingham’s attacking skills would give the wolves a desired new element, there are concerns about his light 6-foot-1 frame.

Noted on 176 pounds, the 20-year-old guard must add strength to reach his full potential. This would undoubtedly benefit Dillingham to both ends of the court, but especially in the defense, which remains the greatest care for his play.

All this does not mean that Dillingham cannot be a productive attacking player with a light frame. He is really a gifted shot with dazzling handles and flaring speed. Dillingham in particular shot 52.5 percent on discs and on average 15.3 points per 36 minutes. Moreover, Dillingham is a rock-solid playmaker. However, adding strength would certainly benefit from Dillingham, especially as a finisher.

By adding some more muscles, Dillingham could end up more comfortably through contact. Improving something that is already a power of him would bring Dillingham’s attacking game to the next level.

Dillingham’s defense would be the most significant advantage of adding strength

Nevertheless, the real benefit of Dillingham Bulking would come to the defensive end of the court. Given his height, Dillingham will always be a target for defense. This will be especially problematic in PlayOFF institutions when the hunt for matchup occurs more often. However, adding what muscles would help to keep Dillingham better when he is attacked defensively.

If we look at guards who are similar to Dillingham, many of these players are considerably heavier. Fred VanVleet (6-foot, 197 pounds), Darius Garland (6-foot-1, 192 pounds) and Tyrese Maxey (6-foot-2, 200 pounds). Garland is the most reasonable physical comparison with Dillingham. As Rookie, Garland weighed, just like Dillingham, 175 pounds and the two have somewhat similar attacking skills. Garland has never been a positive defender, but he has avoided to be a complete liability with extra strength.

VanVlete is one of the most impactful smaller guards of the competition in the defense. Although he has a more naturally sturdy frame, it shows the value of strength on the defense. The teammate of Dillingham, Mike Conley, who weighs 175 pounds and is in his prime, was one of the best perimeter defenders in the competition. However, Conley is an inch shorter than Dillingham and is the exception to the rule. Even if they have the same weight, Conley has a little more muscles and is an incredibly intelligent basketball player. In general, guards who are smaller have to make up for the most part in muscles.

Again, this is not going to say that Dillingham now has to add 15 to 20 pounds to be a productive rotation player this season. For him to reach his ceiling, it will be necessary to add any force. Perhaps this is a slower process for Dillingham, but it is something that ultimately has to happen.

Dillingham has an advantage at star level and could very well be the Point Guard of the future alongside Anthony Edwards. Nevertheless, adding any force will be crucial for Dillingham to fulfill this potential.
