With the window closed until summer, here are the five biggest moves that happened over the winter.
The most expensive Premier League transfers in the January period:
5. Lucas Paqueta: West Ham to Flamengo – £36.5m
It feels like a distant memory now, but the Lucas Paqueta saga came to an end last week. The Brazilian midfielder returned to his home country after pushing for a move away in January, joining boyhood club Flamengo on a £36.5 million contract.
Paqueta received offers from clubs in Europe but turned them down because he wanted to be in Brazil for his “mental health” and to “regain peace.”
4. Brennan Johnson: Spurs to Crystal Palace – £35m
Crystal Palace fans could be forgiven for scrutinizing their club’s transfer activities this season. They lost two key pillars in Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi, and spent big on Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Johnson isn’t a bad player by any means, but he doesn’t offer the same level of creativity or excitement as Eze.
3. Jorgen Strand Larsen: Wolves to Crystal Palace – £43m
After holding out in the summer amid a flurry of interest in the striker, Wolves eventually sold Jorgen Strand Larsen to Crystal Palace on Deadline Day for £43m plus £5m in potential add-ons.
The Norwegian striker was meant to come in as a replacement for the outgoing Jean-Philippe Mateta, but the France international’s move to AC Milan fell through after his medical treatment reportedly revealed a serious knee injury.
2. Jeremy Jacquet: Rennes to Liverpool – £55 million
Liverpool finally have the centre-back they need. Only they didn’t. At least not yet, with Jeremy Jacquet set to arrive in the summer after the Reds agreed to pay Rennes £55m plus £5m in potential add-ons for the defender on Deadline Day.
1. Antoine Semenyo: Bournemouth to Manchester City – £62.5 million
Manchester City, the most in-demand player on the market, beat Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs last month with the signing of Antoine Semenyo. The winger is already proving to be well worth the £62.5m plus £1.5m in add-ons they paid Bournemouth after scoring four goals and an assist in his first five games at City.
