The first two decades of the new Millennium, the Golden Standard for the penguins in terms of physicality and toughness. In particular the Ray Shero ERA that lasted from 2006-14.
His appreciation for toughness and tough boys was undoubtedly inherited from his father, former Broad Street Bullies coach Fred Sherowhose flyers teams wrote the book about winning through intimidation.
Aware that the club he inherited from Hall-of-Famer Craig Patrick Spier and Vuur, the younger Shero, lacked the task of making the pens more difficult to play against.
The result?
The steel city became a kind of oasis for some of the most difficult players of the time. In no special order, Craig Adams” Arron Asham” Matt Cooke” Deryk Oballandland” Hall gill” Swear glass” Eric Godard” “Scary” Gary Roberts” Mike Rupp” Jarkko Ruutu And Chris Thorburn Understood in the ‘Burgh. To say nothing about rough -grown skaters such as Paul Bissonnette” Ryan Malone” Brooks Orpik, Zach Sill And Joe Vitale.
An obscure sixth round pick that worked out of the Echl, England caused quite a stir as a 28-year-old Rookie defender when he Kayoed Toronto’s impressive Slugger, Colton OrrThan Blooded and battered Philly’s Jody Shelley Two weeks later.
One of the most difficult smaller men ever to tilt on a few skates, Asham in the same way and notorious has turned off the caps much larger Jay Beagle.
Godard, very underestimated in my book, Let Oilers Branded Steve Macintyre (also briefly a pen) with a thunderous volley of rights, in the process that broke the orbital bone of his enemy.
Roberts’ Exploits are well documented Penguinpoop. He would have been the subject of his own bio if he was not prominent in a recent article.
Two of the more flamboyant fighters of the team happened to be NHL heavyweight champions.
“Big” Georges Larique Arrived on 27 February 2007, in a deal with the Coyotes for Daniel “Car Bomb” CarcilloAnother frequent hunter who never played a regular season game for the pens.
Saying that Larique was larger than life, both in terms of bulk and personality, would be an understatement of equally large proportions. Modest mentioned on 6’3 and 253 pounds, Georges’ actual playing weight was probably closer to 270. A man who is so large that ‘large’ was actually being inoculated in his name.
The reputation of BGL as a heavyweight champion was firmly established by the time he had arrived in the ‘Burgh. He quickly strengthened his representative by hiring ORR and equally impressive old rival Donald Brashear.
Larique would drop the gloves 15 times during his season and change with the pens, including rematches with ORR, Brashear and Kolossal Latvian Raitis Ivanans. (He had famous “good luck” for Ivanans for an earlier battle.)
The big man was not entirely one -dimensional. Although an iron skating, when Larique threw on the Puck, usually along the wall, it was almost impossible to take it away from him. Talk about Puck owners! Opposite skaters who tried to squeeze the rubber loose, bounced instead of his gigantic frame as so many ping -pong balls threw to a brick wall.
The second heavyweight champion of the pens arrived almost a decade later. Included Jamie Oleksiak And Erik Gudbransonone of the three heavyweights (four if you count Tom Sisters) taken over by Shero’s successor, Jim Rutherford.
Ryan Reaves was perhaps even more colorful than Larique, if possible. Imho, a more deadly hunter. Blessed with a powerful frame and long arms of 6’2 ”2 ‘2’ 225 pounds, the son of the Canadian Football League star Willard Reaves (and descendant of our Marshal Bass Reaven) could Real Nude snail.
As an up-and-comer with the blues, he recorded twice and earned and earned A quick decision And a draw. Not an easy performance. Just like Larique, his status such as the Capo Dei Capi of NHL enforcement officers was well established by the time he arrived through a controversial trade with the blues in the summer of 2017.
In just his third game with the black and gold, “the sheriff” battered outgunned Austin Watson and published one SLA BE PRODIVALS HEAVY Cody McLeod. Scored a goal for a good measure, all in 6:23 of the Ice Age.
The last figure was instructive. No lover of tough boys, Pennen coach Mike Sullivan The ice age of the pots with an eye drop with an eye. Indeed, Reavo’s Atoi with the pens immersed to a meager 6:45, the second lowest of his career.
Too bad too. Reaves not only performed his primary function with deadly precision, he could also be a Uber-physical force on the pre-check (316 hits for Vegas in ’19 -20) if the chance was offered. Ryan also had a great personality and helped to keep the team loose with his constant jokes Phil Kessel.
That was the way of things during the Sullivan era. Who brought a pronounced end not only for the short stay of eight months of Reaves, but also for every appearance of toughness and physicality. Culminating in the regrettable spectacle of Rail-Dunne Marcus PetterssonGame as a butcher’s block but heavily outgunned, fighting (and losing) of the most recent fights of the team.
And so my series concludes about the heaviest penguins. I hope you liked it.
