According to Global Citizen’s Solutions, Russia is the eleventh richest country in the world, ranking higher than South Korea, Australia, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. However, it is least safe for people to visit the country in 2025. “For the first time, Russia is the least peaceful country in the world according to the 2025 GPI, followed by Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen,” the GPI 2025 report shows.
The research also shows which countries have experienced the greatest “deterioration” over the past year, with Russia among the largest. “Russia recorded the third largest deterioration of any country on the GPI for 2025, with the overall score worsening by 6.5 percent,” the GPI revealed.
“Russia has fallen two places in the rankings and is now the least peaceful country on the GPI. The main cause of the deterioration of peace in Russia was the ongoing war with Ukraine, the impact of which was reflected in significant deteriorations in the domains of Persistent Conflict and Safety and Security, which deteriorated by 13.4 percent and 4.6 percent respectively.”
Although Russia is considered one of the richest countries in the world, that is not necessarily reflected in the lived experience of its citizens. According to the European Parliament, Russian economic growth has widened the wealth gap among the population.
“The income gap is exacerbated by factors such as corruption and low taxes for the wealthy, but is also mitigated by a relatively inclusive education system,” the report says.
It adds that statistics show that wealth and income are not equally distributed among Russians. “Nearly half of national pre-tax income goes to Russia’s top 10%, compared to about a third in France; Russia has more billionaires relative to the size of its economy than any other major country,” the report says.
The British Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia. It warns Britons of security incidents such as drone attacks and Russian air defense activities, a lack of flights to return to Britain and a limited ability of the British government to provide support.
It also warns that Russia has a track record of targeting foreigners and holding them in detention as leverage against other countries. Meanwhile, the FCDO’s ability to assist travelers in these circumstances is “extremely limited.”
In the GPI 2025 list, Britain is at number 30, while the US is significantly low at 128.
