The S1 Lotus Esprit is one of the most beautiful cars ever written by human hands, but later models have gotten a little… worse. With Lotus refocusing on electric cars and SUVs, it seemed we would never return to those glorious days of the Giugiaro-designed, sharp Lotii. But now the equally disappointed enthusiasts have run out Encor design want to revive the S1 Esprit with all the features of the modern supercardom – and the V8 engine of the later S4 Esprit.
Look, the Encor Series 1 is a restomod, but not of the S1 Esprit you might expect. Instead, this is essentially a complete reconstruction of the later twin-turbo V8 models. Encor even needs a V8 car as a donor on which to work its magic. That magic includes a carbon fiber monocoque, a lowered suspension, a completely updated interior and enough engine work to reach 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Not that you’re likely to encounter one of these horses: Encor promises to make just 50 cars.
You’re just as likely to see one on the street now as it is once they’re built
Bringing back the S1 Esprit with modern technology is an extremely cool undertaking, but it’s a shame that these will probably all be locked away in safes so they can be traded between wealthy hermits without subjecting them to damage like ‘mileage’. I, for one, hope that some people who buy these will end up using them. It would be nice to see a modernized S1 Esprit.
