The longest losing streaks of reigning Premier League champions

Liverpool’s latest low point came on Sunday when the champions were defeated by Manchester United at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s side have suffered a difficult run of form in recent weeks, losing four games in a row in all competitions, including three successive defeats in the Premier League.

Their dip has seen Liverpool drop to fourth place, while only two reigning Premier League champions have ever lost more league games.

The reigning Premier League champion who has lost the most games in a row

Blackburn Rovers – 1995/96 (3)

Blackburn Rovers climbed Premier League Everest in 1994/95 when Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton presided over their title success. Rovers guided Manchester United to the title, securing the club’s first crown in 81 years.

Kenny Dalglish left as manager after that success and replacement Ray Hardford struggled in a disappointing defense. Blackburn finished the campaign seventh in the table, during a season in which the club twice lost three consecutive games.

Rovers were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton and Manchester United in August in a disastrous start to their title defence, before losing in successive matches to Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa in February 1996.

Chelsea – 2015/16 (3)

Jose Mourinho’s second spell as Chelsea manager imploded in 2015/16, just months after winning his third title with the club. The champions lost seven of their first 12 games, including three consecutive defeats to West Ham, Liverpool and Stoke.

Chelsea sacked Mourinho in December after losing nine of their first 16 games. The Blues were just one point above the relegation places at the time of his departure. Guus Hiddink arrived as interim boss to steady the ship and guided Chelsea to the relative safety of 10th place.

Liverpool – 2025/26 (3)

Liverpool’s three consecutive defeats are the third worst run of any reigning champion. After starting the season with five consecutive wins to top the rankings, the wheels have fallen off for Arne Slot’s side.

Crystal Palace scored an injury-time winner to sink the champions on 27 September, before Chelsea also scored a decisive goal in the final seconds a week later. Manchester United made it three defeats in a row on Sunday as Harry Maguire’s header sealed the visitor’s first win at Anfield since 2016. With a Champions League defeat at Galatasaray in between, Slot is under pressure to turn the results around.

Manchester City – 2024/25 (4)

Manchester City’s vice-like grip on the Premier League was loosened in the 2024/25 season as Pep Guardiola’s side finished third. After winning a record four titles in a row, the champions struggled to go again last season.

A nightmare run saw the Citizens lose four games in a row between November 2 and December 4, while Bournemouth, Brighton, Tottenham and Liverpool all defeated the champions. City lost twice more before the turn of the year, but eventually improved their form to seal qualification for the Champions League.

Leicester City – 2016/17 (5)

Leicester City holds the unwanted record for the longest losing streak among reigning Premier League champions. The Foxes pulled off one of the sport’s biggest ever shocks by winning the title in 2015/16 despite starting the season as relegation favourites.

The summer departure of N’Golo Kante to Chelsea had an impact on their title defense, as Leicester dropped to 12th in the table. Their worst run came in January and February, when the Foxes lost five without scoring a goal. The decision was made to sack title-winning coach Claudio Ranieri, with Craig Shakespeare named as his replacement.
