The Utah Jazz could have a chance to get involved in a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade and improve as a result. As teams around the league prepare to make their bids for Antetokounmpo, the Jazz should look at a potential deal differently. Instead of trying to sign Antetokounmpo, they should want to be a third team.
Maybe the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, or whoever trades for Antetokounmpo can make a standard two-team trade. But that may not be as easy as it sounds. And if the two sides need a third team to join in, the Jazz could be in a perfect position to do so.
It can even improve them.
The Jazz could be a third team in a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade
Utah is in a strange place. They are tanking, but it is clear that they are moving in the right direction as they have some very talented young players ready to lead the next era of Jazz basketball.
Keyonte George has made a big leap this season and Ace Bailey is still a rookie, but he’s already shown flashes of what he can do could be at the bottom of the line.
Despite all that, the Jazz are unable to compete for a playoff spot this year. So why not get involved as the third team in an Antetokounmpo trade, add some picks or expiring contracts and go from there?
For example, what if the Knicks try to trade for Antetokounmpo? The Milwaukee Bucks will want a haul, and they may not want to keep some of the players they get back.
Or what if they send someone like Karl-Anthony Towns to a third team, and that third team has assets that the Bucks don’t necessarily want? There are plenty of opportunities to get in on the action.
What if the Memphis Grizzlies wanted to make an Antetokounmpo trade to get Karl-Anthony Towns? Could the Jazz somehow end up with Santi Aldama?
What about the Golden State Warriors?? Could there be a world where Utah could harass Moses Moody or Brandin Podziemski?
Maybe Utah could even explore the possibility of adding a guy like Bobby Portis, who could likely be flipped for a decent price this summer.
The point is, regardless of which teams get involved in a potential deal for Antetokounmpo, the Jazz could be in a unique position to benefit as the third team.
It’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
