The Germans also have a strong position in the luxury segment. After all, the best products from the luxury segment often came from Germany. If you want the most efficient German luxury SUV then this is the model to go for, and it’s a model that’s charming, stylish and packed with character.
Take a look at the Mercedes GLA
If you want the most efficient German luxury SUV, you’ll unsurprisingly have to go small. In this case, among the small luxury crossover SUVs are the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is the most economical of all. Please note that we did not take PHEVs into account in this exercise.
29 mpg combined
It is not surprising that the most economical version of the GLA is the one that is not equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD). The front-wheel drive (FWD) version can achieve a combined 29 MPG, while achieving 26 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway. Other German competitors in this area include the recently redesigned 2026 Audi Q3 and the 2026 BMW X1. However, both models come as is with AWD, which understandably makes them a little thirstier. For the time being, the 2026 Audi Q3 is too new and has therefore not yet been assessed by the EPAbut even the Q3 comes standard with Quattro AWD and will therefore probably not match the consumption figures of the FWD version of the GLA.
Turbocharged power
That efficiency is paired with a perky 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). This is good enough for a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 6.8 seconds. Interestingly, this is the only one of these small German luxury SUVs that is mildly electrified, as the engine is equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid electrification.

Although the GLA 250 is close to the performance specs and power of the BMW X1 xDrive28i and the Audi Q3, it is the least powerful of the three. The Unsurprisingly, the Q3, which has the most power of the bunch, also had the quickest 0-62mph at just 5.5 seconds.
Every small Mercedes SUV you need to know
How many small Mercedes SUVs are available to you? You might be surprised to find out that you have quite a few options.
Everything else the GLA offers
The Mercedes-Benz GLA 2026 is your entry-level model in the brand’s portfolio. Strangely enough, the CLA is no longer the most affordable way to enter the Mercedes brand, as the compact sedan is not yet offered with an internal combustion engine (ICE). For now, this is what the cheapest Mercedes-Benz in 2026 offers to potential buyers.
Hatchback styling on poles
Now in its second generation, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA builds on the hatchback-on-stilts styling of the previous model. In any case, it is not robust, because even with a black plastic covering, the GLA does not look too impressive. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because what you end up with is a small crossover SUV that looks stylish and youthful. At the front, the GLA proudly shows off its three-pointed star logo, embedded in its wide grille. This is flanked by sleek LED headlights, while the satin silver trim at the bottom of the bumper adds a sense of refinement to the front end.
Other nice touches include the standard 18-inch wheels, but for extra style points you can opt for larger wheels, or even splurge on the $3,300 AMG Night Package, which adds the AMG exterior, the choice of 19- or 20-inch wheels, sport brakes and other details that enhance the sportiness of the GLA’s interior.

Premium interior atmosphere
This time the GLA is slightly larger than the model it replaces, resulting in a slightly higher driving position. As a result, the seating position is in this ‘Goldilocks’ zone, where it is neither too low nor too high for people of all ages. Once inside, you’ll appreciate the sumptuous quality of the GLA’s surfaces. Soft-touch materials are found everywhere except the lower parts of the doors and dashboard, but that’s expected of all its rivals at this price. The GLA comes standard with MB-Tex artificial leather upholstery and glossy silver trim parts, but you can make the interior really luxurious by opting for real leather seats, together with real aluminum or wooden trim parts.
Elsewhere, the interior is spacious enough for its size, but don’t expect the same level of space as a GLC. The technical features are also quite good: all variants come with the MBUX infotainment with two 10.25-inch displays. There are several optional extras available to make the GLA a vehicle that will satisfy you. The Exclusive Trim adds 64-colour ambient lighting, smart access and wireless charging, while the Pinnacle Trim includes all the stuff of the Premium Trim, but with features like a panoramic sunroof, built-in navigation, an advanced sound system and a 360-degree camera. Unfortunately, we’re not happy with the fact that driving features like adaptive cruise control are optional, as even a base Corolla has this feature as standard.
The smoothest SUVs available today
If you’re looking for a cozy and luxurious SUV, you want one that can handle the bumps in the road with ease. Here you will find the smoothest driving SUVs.
The Q3 and X1 are worth a look
If you’re considering the GLA 250 for its increasing fuel economy advantage, you might also want to check out the X1 xDrive28i or the Q3. Compared to the GLA, the other two small German SUVs stand out here.
The best power in its class? Audi Q3
The 2026 Audi Q3 is heading to dealers right now, and as the newest kid on the block in the luxury segment, there’s a lot to like about this new model. From a styling perspective, the North American market model comes standard with the S Line exterior, so from that point of view the Q3 already has a slight edge. The interior is also very modern, but whether it is premium or not, we will have to feel it first before we can draw a definitive conclusion.
But I definitely think the latest MMI infotainment is the best of the three German brands, as the interface is easy to understand and less overwhelming on the eyes. BMW’s very colorful iDrive 9 looks too abstract for me, to the point that the infotainment system starts to look a bit too gimmicky. What isn’t a gimmick is its class-leading power, which also means the Q3 is the fastest to 60mph among the trio of small German luxury SUVs. A word of warning: Audi has bundled the wiper and gear lever into one multi-function lever in the Q3, so check this feature first if it suits your preferences.

Flexible interior? BMW X1
For those seeking functionality, the X1’s conventional and upright shape gives it the most flexible interior. Compared to the other two offerings, the 2026 BMW X1 has the most conventional silhouette, as the Q3 and GLA go somewhat for a hatchback-on-stilts look. The impression of spaciousness is translated into the volume figures of the interior, as you will see here.
Furthermore, the X1 has also built a reputation for being the sportiest among small German luxury SUVs, and combined with its practical interior, the On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz also has the GLB which is closely related to the GLA, splitting its customer base between the two models.
