The Phoenix Suns signed Tyus Jones to a one-year deal worth $3.3 million in 2024, which felt too good to be true. It turned out to be too good to be true, as Jones ultimately lost his starting spot. He signed with the Magic this summer on a one-year, $7 million contract for a fresh start, but his time in Orlando hasn’t gone well, to say the least. Now that it’s December 15th, Jones is eligible to be traded.
That doesn’t mean the Magic will trade Jones Today (it could happen though!), but they need to explore the backup point monitoring market. Jones is averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 assists per game for his career, which is 26.8% from three. He is averaging just 14.1 minutes per game in 21 games. Defensive limitations are nothing new for Jones, but he doesn’t shoot the ball well (at all).
If the regular season were to end today, Orlando would secure a spot in the playoffs. Before the season started, the Magic went all-in on Desmond Bane and took advantage of a “weakened” Eastern Conference. They are no longer in a place where reaching the playoffs is itself a victory. Orlando really wants to make noise.
The front office should look for ways to upgrade within the margins, with the backup point guard position at the top of their list. Not everyone is lucky enough to have Collin Gillespie.
Tyus Jones is eligible for trade now that December 15th is here
If you thought Jones’ time in Phoenix was rough, you didn’t know How bad it can get. He’s about to become unplayable for the Magic. It’s gotten to the point where some fans view a Chris Paul trade as an upgrade. Mind you, Paul is also an undersized guard with defensive limitations at age 40. Jones was bad, but Paul didn’t do much in the 16 games he played for the Clippers.
Now that trading season is officially here, the rumors will increase. Orlando will get a better idea of which backup point guards are available. Jones was supposed to be the answer to the bench magic, but his play has fallen off a cliff. Maybe he needs that another change of scenery to get back to the kind of player he was in Memphis.
Even if it didn’t work out for Jones and the Suns, hopefully he will either turn the corner in Orlando or find his feet elsewhere.
