Since taking on the role, Tuchel has brought a sense of clarity to the national team. Personality and star power are no longer guaranteed starting positions. The training camps have become tighter, the tactical reporting more precise, and there is a growing sense that the squad understands not only what is required of them, but why.
The results have led to easy qualification for 2026, and internally the FA believes they have a “world-class coach who is doing a really good job”.
Chief executive Mark Bullingham was keen to emphasize that the extension does not amount to a free pass after this summer’s World Cup. There are, he confirmed, ‘performance conditions’ attached to Tuchel remaining in his post, although he declined to detail whether the deal includes a break clause at the end of the tournament.
When asked what would happen if England suffered a disastrous World Cup, Bullingham was clear about the FA’s intentions. “We appointed him with a view that he will be our coach for 2028. Everyone has performance conditions in their contract, you wouldn’t expect me to respond to that,” he said. “I have them too, but we are clear that we want him to coach us in 2028.”
Criticism focused on the timing of the deal, as World Cups have a habit of thinning the coaching herd. Bullingham dismissed that logic as impractical. “I just don’t think that’s realistic,” he said.
“If you look at anyone in any company on a fixed-term contract, they will already be thinking about their future. From our point of view, we felt we had a world-class coach who was doing a really good job for us, and we wanted him to continue.”
The move also quiets the inevitable noise at club level. Although Bullingham denied the Manchester United vacancy played any role, Tuchel’s signing removes him from a likely summer carousel.
“Every time we have a tournament we want to know where we will be in a few months,” Bullingham added. “We tend to want to know where we stand, to remove that uncertainty… it gives everyone – the support team and the players – that certainty.”
For England it is a clear statement that they believe in the direction of travel and that Tuchel is the man to drive it.
