The Barred Owl, from Rewild Homes, is based on a three-axle trailer and has a length of 34 ft (10.3 m), which is typical for a North American small house. More striking is the larger width of 3 meters, which offers more breathing space than the standard 2.6 meters. This difference may sound trivial, but on the scale of small houses, every inch matters. The downside is that you will of course need a permit to tow on public roads, but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker unless you plan to live a nomadic lifestyle.
The exterior of the home is finished with durable metal siding with warm cedar accents and a standing seam metal roof. A small overhang obscures the glass front door, which will be more convenient if a terrace is also installed. Stepping inside, the door opens into a well-lit living room, finished in whitewashed pine tongue-and-groove, with the wider floor plan giving a sense of openness.
The living room features a sofa placed around a window and a low power electric fireplace sufficient to heat the entire house. A sofa bed would also be a good addition for those wanting a guest sleeping option, and there is also room to install an entertainment center and TV.
Nearby is the Barred Owl’s kitchen, a galley-style kitchen with full-size appliances including a refrigerator/freezer, sink, propane oven and four-burner stovetop. It has butcher block units and cupboards, and there’s also a handy dining area nearby that seats two and doubles as a home office.
The bathroom is accessed through a custom-made barn-style sliding door and looks impressively spacious. This is partly down to the high ceiling (the advantage of no attic above), plus a few tall windows to let in natural light. It contains a shower, a sink and a flush toilet prepared in case the owner wants to exchange it for a composting model. It also has a washer/dryer and some more closets.
The bedroom is located on the opposite side of the house from the entrance and is accessible from the bathroom through a second sliding door. It’s quite basic in there, with a double bed and a small radiator, but the single-storey layout means it has enough headroom to stand up, which is always a nice advantage in a small house.
