It has been repeatedly said that sport and politics are not allowed to mix. But don’t tell the Elizabeth Williams of the Chicago Sky. Since she arrived in the competition of Duke in 2016, she has solidified her place on both the front court and on the front lines.

Williams played for the Connecticut Sun, Atlanta Dream and Washington Mystics before she comes to heaven in 2023. She has collected a number of remarkable performance on the field. In 2016, Williams was named the most improved player of the WNBA. The following year she made her first all-star performance. In 2020 she was selected for the WNBA All-Defense First Team and made the All-Defense Second Team in 2023. She is known as a consistent presence in the paint and on the shelves. Williams has also taken on the role of mentor to younger teammates.

Outside the field, Williams used the same consistency for the larger good. During the 2020 Covid-restricted season in the Wubble, she was one of the most vocal players who tackle issues around racism, police violence and voting rights. Williams also helped to lead the indictment to the then candidate Rev. Raphael Warnock to choose the US Senate from Georgia, to replace the then Senator and former Atlanta Dream owner Kelly Loeffler after she criticized the Black Lives Matter movement.

From there, the advocacy of Williams has grown. She is currently secretary of the WNBPA. She is in the middle of the continuous negotiations on collective negotiation agreement (CBA) between the players and the competition. The players demand a larger part of the income, higher salaries, increased family benefits and improved working conditions. The MKBA agreement of 2020 is going at the end of this year and some players have indicated that they will make the willingness to hit if they do not get what they want.

As far as Williams is concerned, she has only added to her CV in advocacy by obtaining a master’s degree in Global Health at Arizona State University in 2024. She also looks at the medical school to actively tackle the differences in health care. Her inspiration to want to be a social responsibility comes from growing up in England as the child of Nigerian immigrants.

“I’m just,” she said to Swish Appeal. “I am a child of immigrants and work hard and do things for others in my blood. I think I have that mentality:” This game is bigger than me. “Is a bit ingrained.”

Her future, just like the future of the competition, is in the air, but has so much promise. She fully understands that making name outside the field is just as relevant as doing this in court. “For me, to be able to expand myself from the field, to be a leader, to be trained, to communicate in a way that I know I put the work in it so that people will listen,” Williams said.

Williams has received honor for her work, including the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award from 2023, awarded to the player in the Wnba who embodies the essence of sportiness.

It is sufficient to say that when there is a problem, count on Elizabeth Williams to be there, ready to find a solution.
