The idea that style should be clear – that it should be there without effort or reflection – has long been a prevailing performance in fashion. For decades, industry has cultivated the idea that real style is instinctive and immune to extensions, while at the same time they are encouraged to buy ourselves in this obvious through a few important items of clothing that show brands and editors. I believe in this dissertation. For me it is precisely the daily life, and the basis of the wardrobe, which makes the style obvious – without having to hunt the latest or unnecessary energy on what to wear.
There is quiet safety in daily life. I learned to appreciate a wardrobe that consists mainly of clothing for daily life – things that are obvious to wear, without much attention. Incidental dresses are also ready to be picked up when the chance is being given, but the center of gravity is simple and useful.
Every fall I do an overview. I choose what is no longer used, is broken or needed to be returned, selling and perhaps releasing a small space. It will be a way to keep the wardrobe alive, but at the same time tight, without unnecessary supplements. Over time I understand that the point of a classic basic wardrobe is exactly that: as soon as the foundation is in place, you only have to supplement the most rare – a party dress or a piece of clothing for special moments. Reaching here took time. Years of testing, sorting and refinement. But the result is a wardrobe that means that I don’t have to think much about the clothing itself. Instead, the focus is shifted to something essential: the feeling, the expression, the presence. I have put together two lists that describe what I consider a solid basic wardrobe.
A well -balanced wardrobe is finally less about the clothing itself, and more about the freedom not to have to think about them much. It is a kind of daily luxury – being able to devote your energy to something else. When I look at my own wardrobe today, I feel a certain relief. Everything has its place, and what is there is carefully chosen. It is a process that will never be completely ready, but that ensures that that part of daily life feels effortlessly because it is so beautiful.
