The door swings wide open for the Timberwolves to finally solve the point guard problem

The Minnesota Timberwolves desperately need some extra ball-handling and overall depth. That’s been clear all season, but in the midst of a five-game losing streak (the team’s longest losing streak since 2022), Minnesota’s need at the trade deadline has never been more apparent.

Mike Conley looks unplayable, Bones Hyland is wildly inconsistent, and Rob Dillingham can’t crack the rotation. If the Wolves are serious about competing for a title, they need someone who can take the pressure off Anthony Edwards in the backcourt.

Fortunately, though, there are plenty of affordable trading targets. Two names the Wolves have long been associated with are Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Recently trusted NBA insider Marc Stein confirmed availability of these two Chicago Bulls guards.

“This winter, rumors persist that the Bulls are eager to make a move by taking advantage of some of their expiring contracts… with both Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu most often mentioned as potential spenders,” Stein wrote.

Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu are obvious trade targets for the Wolves

Without a doubt, White and Dosunmu are trade targets to keep an eye out for for the Wolves before the February 5 deadline.

Trading for White or Dosunmu is a bit complicated given their status as pending free agents. Either way, this will also lower the price for both players – as such, the Wolves should jump at an opportunity to trade for either player.

It’s not too far-fetched to suggest that a combination of Conley, young talent and draft capital could strike a deal with Chicago. With a move like this, the Wolves would be well positioned to make another deep playoff run.

Of the two players, I prefer Dosunmu’s fit (and lower price). Dosunmu is a reliable three-point shooting threat, making an absurd 45.7 percent of his triples. His off-ball abilities make him a good fit for the Wolves. Perhaps more importantly, Ayo is a high-level perimeter defender, something the Wolves need and White can’t provide.

Nevertheless, there’s no denying that White has more offensive advantages, and if you want to swing for the fences, trading for him certainly makes sense.

I believe the Wolves have the resources to trade for him. However, things could get tricky if White demands a hefty contract this season. Still, as a higher upside trade target, White is certainly worth pursuing for the Wolves.

Ultimately, Minnesota needs to trade for a point guard, and the Bulls have two readily available PGs (three if Tre Jones is available), something the Wolves can’t afford to lose.
