The Dallas Stars had two major restricted free agents to sign this upcoming offseason. One was Thomas Harley and the other is Jason Robertson. The Stars and GM Jim Nill signed defenseman Thomas Harley to an eight-year, $84.7 million contract with a cap hit of $10.587 million. But is there still enough left for Robertson?

NHL Rumors: Star GM Jim Nill wants to keep Jason Robertson long-term

Many have wondered about Jason Robertson’s future in Dallas even before Harley was signed. He was embroiled in trade rumors over the summer when Mikko Rantanen signed an eight-year extension with an AAV of $12 million. Although Nill has stated that those trade rumors were a lot of talk as the Stars want to keep this player long-term.

And while talks between Robertson and the Stars continue, despite Nill saying early this year that talks were on pause, the goal remains the same: keep Jason Robertson a long-term member of the Dallas Stars.

If Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta told Jeff Marek on the magazinethe Stars see Robertson as part of their future.

Jeff Marek: “Something we haven’t talked about yet, you can shed some light on this. Something I haven’t talked about much this year and thought would have already been covered considering we’re approaching double digits in games. One contract specifically: Jason Robertson. And where do we stand? Based on your reporting on this player in Dallas.”

Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, it’s nothing exciting, nothing sexy. It’s status quo. That’s what I’ve been told on both sides. The communication is still there. The lines are open. Everyone is still comfortable and no one is panicking.

I’m with you. I thought at least one of these would be packed up by now. They know the importance. We heard Robertson pop up in speculation dating back to last season, especially around the Rantanen stuff. But Dallas said, no, we want this guy. We want him to be part of our future in the long term.

He is an RFA and is controllable, so it gives a sense of urgency and as you know Jeff, everyone likes to work to a deadline. So the sense of urgency is not exactly there at the moment. They have a lot of cap space next season, starting next season, at the projected 104, they are at $28 million.

NHL Rumors: Jason Robertson and Kyle Connor Extension Qualifying

So there is enough money to get by. These are just the major, primary key free agents that Dallas has. Both on the RFA and UFA sides, minus a few other pieces. But from what I was told, it’s a fluid situation, no one is panicking, but also no one seems to be rushing to make anything happen right now. Everyone knows how important he is to the team.”

However, it will be interesting to see what Jason Robertson ends up with in Dallas. Will it be an eight-year contract? Could it be less than eight years? It was clear from the start that Robertson wasn’t going anywhereand it was all talk from outside of Dallas.
