When Harley brought back the Nightster in 2022 after ten years, it marked a big change. Built around the liquid-cooled Revolution Max engine platform, the rebirth was more than a styling refresh. It added agility, horsepower and modern technology while maintaining the low-slung aesthetic riders expect.

Unlike heavier cruisers that rely solely on torque, the Nightster Special uses a lighter frame and high-revving engine to stay agile. It still delivers the muscular rhythm of a V-Twin, a low seat height and a bold silhouette. Compared to its brother, the 121-horsepower Sportster S, the Nightster Special feels more approachable and is the ideal starting point for performance cruising.

Premium Cruiser Experience from $12,499

Thanks to the recent price drop, the standard Nightster, priced at $9,999, is Harley’s most affordable entry-level model in the lineup. The Special builds on that foundation and justifies its $12,499 starting price with features that make everyday driving easier and more versatile. Chief among these is a standard passenger seat and raised steering wheel for relaxed ergonomics. As for rivals, the Indian Sport Scout Sixty starts around $10,499 with lower power and a five-speed gearbox. The Honda Rebel 1100, priced at $9,699, takes a different mechanical path.

The special Nightster engine delivers everyday power with Harley character

A step up from the air-cooled engines of previous Sportsters, the Nightster Special is powered by the most approachable member of the Revolution Max family, the Rev Max 975T. The fully liquid-cooled, short-stroke 975cc engine is shared by both the standard and Special, with variable valve timing on the intake valves and dual overhead camshafts. It is specially tuned for powerful torque in the low and mid range and therefore carries the designation ‘T’.

Performance tuning that balances everyday convenience with cruiser excitement

You get 91bhp at 7,500rpm, and the torque curve remains flat across the rev range, with 72Nm at 5,750rpm. That translates into rapid acceleration, enough to reach 60 mph in less than four seconds. At the same time, you get a combined fuel economy of 52 miles per gallon.

Thanks to the 3.1 gallon tank, you can expect a range of over 150 miles, which is solid for a cruiser. A six-speed transmission is standard, and while there’s no quickshifter, Harley includes Drag-Torque Slip Control to keep everything running smoothly. And like any Harley cruiser, the rear wheel is driven by a belt.

The special Nightster chassis combines comfort with classic cruiser behavior

The feel of the Nightster Special on the road starts with its steel trellis frame. Harley uses the engine as part of the structure, keeping the frame stiff yet light. With a 60.8-inch wheelbase, it lands squarely in the middle between compact bobbers and extended cruisers. The gas tank is located under the seat, lowering the center of gravity and allowing for a curb weight of 483 pounds. Along the way you’ll appreciate the 32 degrees of heel angle on each side, which is more generous than many traditional cruisers that start scraping the pegs at around 27 or 28 degrees.

Suspension-wise, it consists of a 41mm Showa inverted fork up front with 4.6 inches of travel, and twin shocks at the rear with 3.0 inches of travel and remote preload adjustability. These join forces with a 19-inch front wheel combined with a 16-inch rear wheel. Braking duties are handled by a single 320mm disc at the front with a four-piston caliper and a 260mm disc at the rear with a single-piston caliper. ABS is standard.

For about $2,500 more than the standard Nightster, Harley has packed the Special with technology and features that make everyday riding easier. In addition to the versatile Two-Up seat and passenger bolsters, the centerpiece is the 4-inch round TFT display. You’ll see a color screen with turn-by-turn navigation, tire pressure monitoring and more. You can even pair your phone via Bluetooth to make calls or stream music while driving.

The Special also comes with Harley’s Rider Safety Enhancement package, which includes ABS and cornering traction control. You also get torque-slip control. Add tire pressure monitoring, cruise control and a USB-C charging port right next to the gauge, and you have a cruiser that’s ready for practical real-world use.

Technology and ergonomics designed for real-world driving

5-inch handlebar risers add real versatility to the ergonomics, bringing the controls closer for a natural upright position that remains comfortable on longer rides. The stance remains low and aggressive with that black look reminiscent of the Iron 883. You sit upright and alert, with center-mounted foot controls that give you better leverage than forward footpegs, and a seat height (27.1 inches) that makes the bike accessible to almost anyone.

Lighting is all LED, front and rear, with a headlight design that gives the Nightster Special a modern face while keeping the cruiser’s proportions intact. Compared to the standard Nightster, the Special adds a headlight cowl and unique tank graphics, as well as subtle accents that set it apart.
