The club chairman admits his club is trying to sign a young winger from Newcastle United

Cadiz club president Manuel Vizcaino has admitted that the Spanish club are trying to sign Antonito Cordero.

It was seen as an excellent deal when Newcastle United managed to sign the then 18-year-old free agent after the winger turned down a new contract with Malaga.

Antonito Cordero is regarded as one of the best emerging young talents in Spain and has attracted the interest of many clubs. He scored thirteen direct goals for Malaga in the 2024/25 season, scoring six and getting seven assists.

Newcastle United immediately loaned the young winger to Belgian top club Westerlo for the 2025/26 season.

But like so many other loan deals involving Newcastle United’s young players, it has turned out to be a disaster.

As in so many other cases where young NUFC players are loaned out to get plenty of first-team football but then fail to do so, Antonito Cordero has not been given a single league start for Westerlo and instead managed just 87 minutes in seven brief appearances from the bench.

Many Newcastle fans are pointing the finger at Shola Ameobi, who has been the loan coordinator/manager at NUFC since 2019, overseeing young players on loan.

With all parties seemingly accepting that Antonito Cordero should cut back on his one-year loan in Belgium, it appears he could return to Spain soon.

Sports Stadium reporting quotes from Manuel Vizcaino, the president of the Cadiz Club.

He has now admitted: “I can’t confirm that a deal is close because he belongs to another club, but he is a player who is on the market and we are interested in him. However, deals cannot be announced until they are completed.”

Reports from Spain make it clear that this would be another pure loan deal to get the young NUFC player some regular first-team football, with his long-term future still to be seen at St James’ Park. So there is no option to buy for Cadiz (or any other club for that matter), with United hoping the teenager can progress to a first-team future at Newcastle in time.

Manuel Vizcaino hopes his club will sign the young winger, but explains: “There are many parties involved and we will wait and see if he can eventually join Cadiz. We are interested, but if it doesn’t happen we will move on and look for other options.”

Cadiz are busy trying to reach La Liga, currently sixth in the table and looking for extra quality that can help them secure promotion to the Spanish top tier.
