We are now slightly less than a month away from NHL training camps that open. Although it has been a slow combustion of a summer with not much happens, the Calgary Flames had to provide a number of things. It included locking up Matt Coronato, Kevin Bahl, Martin Pospisil and Morgan Frost to contract extensions that the four in Calgary will hold for the near future.
However, there is one important piece that is still without a new contract, and that is Connor Zary. I think many of us thought that the new contract for Zary might be the easiest to do. But while we are here on August 21, Zary is still on the way to this season without a deal.
It would be terrible for Craig Conroy and the rest of his team if they entered the training camp without Zary being under contract. If the previous situations have taught us something, it would be a disaster for both the flames and the Zary.
What will Zary’s New Deal look like
I think the question that has been asked since the start of the low season is: “What does the new deal look like?”
At the start of last season and when the first part of the season went, I was absolutely sure that I would be ready to give a new deal in the seven to eight years reach with an AAV from somewhere between $ 5.5 million to $ 6.0 million with the way he played. He was electric to start the year. Easy the most competent prospect we had seen since the days of Johnny Gaudreau. He rode playing and made the opposition out stupid. When she moved him in the middle, he looked the most comfortable that he has ever been since he was called in November 2023.
However, there were still inconsistencies in his game. Then, without guilt, he sustained two major knee injuries that had eliminated him for most of the season. The second took him out of the crucial play -off push at the end of the year.
The flames must go for less term
If you are going to sign it, I think a bridge is the right choice. There is still a lot of advantage when it comes to Zary and what he can do. I really don’t think he has scratched the surface. The skill and balance are there; He was actually a semi -point per game player in the NHL. There is something there, but we need at least a full season that he is that player of 55 to 60 points before he commits a lot of money and years to him.
I fully expect Zary to be motivated and ready to produce this season, but he first needs a contract. So what does that look like? Given a few of the deals that were distributed outside season this season and for what some of the flames have received, I would expect that he is in the reach of the Frost deal. Something like three years at an AAV of $ 4.25 million to $ 4.5 million is probably the most logical. The Flames will still have the RFA rights towards the end of the RFA rights.
Zary gets three years to prove his value and to prove cash for a long -term agreement. The flames can save a bit of cap space. It is a win-win for all involved. It just has to be done now.
Why this should be done before the camp trains
This is where things can take a turn. We don’t know too much about what is going on between the Flames and Zary camp. We do not know what the dispute in the contract is over. Is it term? Money? Maybe a bit of both? Is Zary Van Streek that he might not get the chance to play the middle next season with the addition of Frost? Did he not find Ryan Huska who sometimes used him in a fourth line role? Who really knows, but we will be in the late stages of the summer. The longer this continues, the more concerned all involved should be.
The lack of a training camp about a contract conflict has never done well. The player misses the most important time with the team to prepare for the season. Whether it is about finding chemistry on a line or learning a new system, that time is the key. Not to mention the fact that the chance of playing matches after a long summer is in the game to get into game form, only benefits the player. Not to get these scenarios, the player harms more than most of them realize.
Other players who have sustained it
Fortunately, the Flames have not had much of it over the years. The last major holdout was in 2016 when Gaudreau should be an extension. That deal was only set two days before the season was set to start. That 2016–17 season turned out to be the worst of Gaudreau with the Flames. Was it all due to the holdout? No, I don’t think so, but he didn’t have the best start of his season that year and didn’t really work until the second half of the season.
We all remember the William Nylander -Saga in Toronto who went all the way until December 2018. He has had his worst statistical year of his career, while he also turned a large group of that fan base against him – many still resentment to this day. More recently we saw how a holdout and missing part of the training camp influenced the goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman by Boston Bruins. He went from one of the best goalkeepers in the competition to the subversal level this season. This was probably largely due to not getting a camp for the season.
Now I am not saying that Zary’s situation will come to such a boiling point, considering how much dop space the flames have, but such situations only leave everyone out badly. This cannot happen with a player like Zary. What kind of copy does that send to the rest of the team, especially if the flames have a huge deal to make with Dustin Wolf for only a year? You certainly don’t want something like that happening to him.
Get this done quickly
Like I said before, I didn’t think this deal would be the one who would last the longest. I was sure that this deal would be a walk in the park for both parties, especially after Coronato had signed his deal in May.
I understand that the flames do not want to spend too much – what is crazy, considering how much cap space they have – and I understand that Zary wants to get what he is worth. However, these are the kind of things that ruin the relationships between a team and a player. It probably played a role in Matthew Tkachuk who leaves and a Lowball offer from Brad Treliving sent Gaudreau gasket a year later.
If the flames want to do this well, this deal must be done before the camp opens. Zary must be there and be ready to have a big season to prove the team that he will become a core piece of this group.
