The Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva presented himself as a torchier for multilateralism in a broken world in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, which revealed plans to call India and China’s leaders to discuss a joint C response to rates imposed by US President Donald Trump.
“What President Trump does is tacitly want to dismantle multilateralism, where similarities are collectively concluded within institutions and replacing unilateralism, where he negotiates one on one with other countries,” Lula said.
“Which negotiation forces has a small Latin -American country against the United States? None.”
Lula said he will initiate a conversation at the Brics group of developing countries about tackling Trump’s rates. He said he was planning to call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, and China’s Xi Jinping and other leaders afterwards. The group also has Russia and other emerging economies among its members.
“I’m going to try to discuss with them about how everyone is doing in this situation, what the implications are for every country, so we can make a decision,” he said. “It is important to remember that the BRIC’s have ten countries on the G20,” he added, referring to the group that collects 20 of the world’s greatest economies.
Lula emphasized that Brazil now has the presidency of the BRICs and said that he wants to discuss with allies why Trump is attacking multilateralism and what his goals can be.
Trump called the Brics “Anti-American” and last month threatened the nations of the block with extra 10% rates, while the group gathered in a top in Rio de Janeiro.
