The biggest Ryder Cup Pept Talk of all time

In 1967 Ben Hogan delivered what the largest Ryder Cup Peptalk must be of all time.

Not that the team needed it. They won 23.5 – 8.5, the biggest victory margin in the history of Ryder Cup.

Here is the speech of the Hawk:

Guys, there is nothing to be the captain of the Ryder Cup. You are all great players. Couples is very simple. I will link your boys together who are crooked, and I will link your boys together who drive straight. And the first ball is struck by Julius Boros, because he doesn’t care about anything. So you will just play your game.

You have these uniforms here. If you don’t like the way they fit or whatever, don’t wear them. I could never play in someone else’s clothes. Doug Sanders, if you want to come out here and you want to dress like a peacock, that’s fine. Whatever you want.

But let me tell you one thing: I don’t want my name on that trophy as a losing captain.

It is clear that it worked.

The American team schedule of 1967 was:

  • Julius Boros
  • Gay brewer
  • Billy Casper
  • Gardner Dickinson
  • Al Geiberger
  • Gene Littler
  • Bobby Nichols
  • Arnold Palmer
  • Johnny Pott
  • Doug Sanders

On a historical and tailor’s note: Doug Sanders was known as the “Peacock of the Fairways” for his style of playing in bright colors, with shoes that were matching. He reportedly had hundreds of shoes. The oppressive monopolistic getty images apparently have the rights in every photo everywhere, so I can’t show you. But look it up in Google images.

Sanders won 20 times on the PGA Tour, but did not succeed in winning a major.

He was apparently the model for the main character in the classic golf novel of Dan Jenkins, Dead Solid Perfect.

Julius Boros, also mentioned, won 18 PGA Tour events and three Majors (1968 PGA, 1952 and 1963 US Open) in a career that extended from the 1950s to the 1960s. He also played an important role in launching the Senior Tour, where he won three times.
