In part four of my series, where I give goals for the entire New Orleans Pelicans selection for the 2025-26 season, I will talk about the newly acquired wing Saddiq Bey.
After spending last season looking from the sidelines for the Washington Wizards while taking care of an ACL Teacher, Bey is expected to be completely healthy and ready to go on the opening evening. During his entire 4-year-old NBA career, he played a winning brand of basketball.
Although he has only made once in his career on 6’7 play-offs “with a solid frame of 215 pounds, Bey has the combination of fast feet and size to be a high-impact defender, the playoff time. Moreover, he is a career 35.2% three-point shooter that can be warmed at an eye-catcher.
With the lack of wing depth behind Herb Jones and Trey Murphy, I believe that Bey will get a major role from the bank this season. I am excited to see how he can improve the shooting and defense of the Pelicans, because these were the areas where New Orleans is in the lower five last season.
He should not make crazy improvements or changes to his game to have a successful year for the Pelicans. All I really think Bey has to do is be more locked in defensive and some improving consistency.
Be efficient and be a point of attack defender for the second unit
All the season, I have preached that the pelicans need a point of attack defender, which is why I was so in love with the Pelicans who acquire Olivier-Maxence Prosper from the Mavericks. However, we all know that he eventually signed with the Memphis Grizzlies.
So with New Orleans who needs someone in his second unit who can defend against the point attack, Bey may have to step into that role. He has always been a good defender and someone who can help string together, so I think that more assertive and aggressive defensive should be a goal for him this season.
At the offensive end we have seen the efficiency of Bey fluctuate from year to year. Some years he shot over 40%; Others, he shot below. The same for his three -point shooting, we have seen him shoot both above and less than 35% of three. If he is going to be so effective as I think he can be for the Pelicans, he must shoot at least 43% and 35% of three.
During his career, Bey shot on average 11.5 times per game, a number that will probably decrease if he moves from a daily starter to a bank player. This should help him to remain more efficient and effective for the New Orleans Pelicans.
