The biggest Edward Cabrera question in the Yankees trade talks

Brian Cashman acknowledged last month that the Yankees are “vulnerable” at the front of the rotation to start the season.

Perhaps Edward Cabrera could help solve that predicament, although the biggest blow against him could also give the Yankees some pause in their talks with the Marlins about acquiring the talented right-hander — a possibility that seemed to have lost some steam on Monday.

The Yankees know they will have to hold down the fort early in the regular season as they await the return of Carlos Rodón, Gerrit Cole and ultimately Clarke Schmidt from their respective rehabilitation clinics for elbow surgery – Rodón in late April or early May, Cole in May or June and Schmidt sometime in the second half. That puts a premium on the good health and durability of the starters they already have and any other Cashman could land for the rest of the offseason – like Cabrera, Freddy Peralta or another arm available via trade.

The 27-year-old Cabrera certainly has the upside of being able to pitch at the front of a rotation, coming off a season in which he posted a 3.53 ERA over 26 starts, with 150 strikeouts in 137 ²/₃ innings. But that workload was high in his career and was limited by two appearances on the injured list, first due to a blister problem and then, more worryingly, a right elbow sprain. He also missed time in 2023 and 2024 with a right shoulder impingement.
