The B -52 that almost touched an airplane actually hit almost another plane – Jalopnik

This has all become an indicator that air traffic control in the US is not in good health. Towers are understood throughout the country by people who are overworked, in a job with a zero margin for errors. The January crash of an army Black Hawk with a regional jet happened while the ATC service was double booked on both helicopter and aircraft tasks, which most likely contributed to the horrible result.

In this case, however, the Minot Airport Tower had a total of one operator. And it wasn’t even a FAA tower. It appears that this is much more common than you think.

Airports have air traffic controllers, right? Well, no, actually – only about 10% of American airports, she has, per AP. They will of course be at the large international airports, but the huge number of smaller airports will often be much less equipped. Many of them will only have a person with binoculars and a radio to coordinate traffic, and in case you have just gotten confused, yes this is the year 2025. That is not ideal, especially if there is another weather.

Yet it is better than nothing at all, that is where things went a few decades ago. As an alternative to trying to operate every airport itself, the FAA started a contract program with private companies from 1982 to manage ATC at smaller airports. This program has been enormously successful and private towers managed 28% of all American air traffic in 2020. The Minot Airport Tower is such a private company. That makes sense: there are usually only 18-24 flights a day, so it is not exactly traded heavily. Normally. On this specific day there were three planes in the air at the same time, and that is where it became weird.

As the Prelim report of the NTSB is, the Minot Airport has some radar quotation, but only from the other Dakota. South Dakota, a radar station in Rapid City, offers service at the ATC in Minot, and an operator of the first had contact with the last on all three aircraft. It all came together in the worst way, but luckily the Skywest pilot took mounds, just in time, and the B-52 did not hit the Piper either. Catastrophe hardly averted.

The Prelim report stops throwing some debt, but what kind of things can clearly not happen anymore. At the moment, the big wonderful account has assigned $ 12.5 billion to modernizing the entire system, but USDOT already requires $ 19 billion more.
