In summary:
- Ferrari unveiled the Luce, its first electric car, with an interior design by LoveFrom, the company led by former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive.
- Macworld suggests that the Luce’s design elements offer insight into what the canceled Apple Car project might have looked like, and showcase Ive’s signature aesthetic.
- The full reveal, including exterior design and pricing, is expected in May, although current interior photos already show off Ive’s signature graphics and typographic style.
If you’ve ever wondered what could have happened to the Apple Car, now you can satisfy some of your curiosity. Ferrari announced the Luce on Monday, the company’s first electric car. And the main designer behind the car’s cabin and controls is LoveFrom, the company led by Apple’s former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive.
Ferrari has posted several images of what the interior looks like, and you can’t help but think this is a glimpse of what the Apple Car could have looked like.

The look of the graphics and fonts is typical Ive, although some control panels seem busier than you might expect. Ferrari’s announcement of a documentary about the Luce states that Ive was involved in ‘key interface components’, but it is not clear to what extent he was involved.
Did he only design the user interface of the software? Or did he have input into the hardware, like the steering, or the (very cool) key dock and (also very cool) roof control panel? One glaring omission from the announcement is that there are no exterior shots of the bodywork at all. Ferrari is saving that for the full launch in May. We also don’t know how much it will cost, but we expect it to be well out of our price range.
Ferrari has a marketing video for the Luce, in which you don’t actually see anything significant about the car, but you do hear a lot of marketing talk. At 5:02 you can see Jony Ive himself, looking at… something.
It wasn’t until recently that there was public recognition (though not directly from Apple) that the Apple Car was a real project. It was expected to be a luxury vehicle (think BMW, not Ferrari) and possibly self-driving. But after years of working in secret, the project was halted two years ago. It seems like a lot of the ideas I had for the Apple Car have been brought to life thanks to Ferrari.
