The Philadelphia 76ers may have very little time left before the regular season officially begins, but it appears the front office isn’t done looking to make some value additions to the roster that won’t cost an arm and a leg, especially since the team still has a roster spot available.
As already revealed by numerous outlets, the 76ers have reportedly come to terms with free agent wing Marjon Beauchamp on an Exhibit 10 deal. This appears to be a sign-and-waive maneuver to bring him to the team’s G-League affiliate. but as indicated herethe Trail Blazers, his most recent ballclub, could still have his rights in that regard.
On the face of it, this deal is pretty much unmarried. The 76ers will likely be content with filling their two-way spots, and Beauchamp won’t play much, if at all, anyway. Still, given the existing options on the open market, it becomes much easier to think about which players the front office could have gone after, at least from a positional perspective.
Beauchamp never got a fair chance in the NBA. Once seen as a potential key player for the Bucks, he found himself languishing on Milwaukee’s bench behind his veteran counterparts, leaving him bouncing around the league of late.
The 76ers should have gone after another player instead of Marjon Beauchamp
However, the 76ers have no reason to pursue someone like Beauchamp. Already undersized at small forward and lacking reliable three-point shooting, Philly only seems to be doubling down on two of their key weaknesses.
So who else is better? Well, a specific name is not necessary. The front office should have prioritized increasing the size of such a critical position, as well as three-point shooting, given the stagnant offense thus far in the preseason.
Of course, there are also some hard-to-miss names that would have made more sense than the 25-year-old, like Victor Oladipo for example, but that’s just for hunting real names. In reality, the 76ers should also have considered potentially reserving one of their two-way spots for a young prospect who has a higher ceiling to contribute.
Regardless, the Philadelphia 76ers can only focus on how to end training camp on a strong note, and the hope is that when the opening whistle blows, the roster will prove to be as good as it can be, even if only on paper.
