On October 18, the newest group of volleyball legends were inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. The event took place in Holyoke, MA, where the game was invented in 1895 by YMCA PE director William G. Morgan.
The game has progressed by leaps and bounds since then, with a selection of competitions and tournaments around the world, as well as being represented at the Olympic Games. Before revolutionizing ParaVolley, he was President of the Australian Volleyball Association between 1988 and 1997 and also served as Olympic Competition Manager at the Sydney 2000 Games.
Dimitar Karov
Bulgaria’s 81-year-old indoor star Dimitar Karov is a three-time Olympian who is widely regarded as one of his country’s most prominent figures in the sport. He impressed playing internationally and at club level for CSKA Sofia.
Laura Ludwig
German beach volleyball player Laura Ludwig was part of the iconic duo, alongside Kira Walkenhorst, who played the first European women’s gold winners at the 2016 games in Rio. The formidable duo went on to win the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2017, as well as four European Championships.
Ivan Miljkovic
Serbian Ivan Miljkovic is one of the most formidable strikers in indoor football and helped Yugoslavia to Olympic gold in 2000. His impressive CV includes multiple podium finishes and he has also won national championships in Italy, Turkey and Greece.
Guillermo ‘Willy’ Paredes
Argentinian referee Guillermo ‘Willy’ Paredes has been refereeing for decades and is one of the most respected figures in football. He has refereed important matches at the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cups and countless competitive matches during his impressive career.
Francesca Piccinini
Italian indoor star Francesca Piccinini was at the pinnacle of the sport for decades, competing in four Olympic Games and helping Italy to its first FIVB World Championship in 2002. She helped Italy to a variety of medals and was also instrumental in club victories, winning several Serie A1 titles and seven CEV Champions Leagues.
Rosa Garcia Rivas
Peruvian indoor star Rosa ‘China’ Garcia Rivas is known as one of South America’s greatest setters and was key to her country’s silver medal at the 1988 Olympics. She also helped the team to silver and bronze medals at the 1982 and 1986 FIVB World Championships.
Kent Steffes
The The American Kent Steffes is a towering figure in beach volleyball and is widely regarded as one of the best in the men’s game. He was part of the gold medal-winning team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with Karch Kiraly and earned three FIVB gold medals.
Jurgen Wagner
German coach Jürgen Wagner has the honor of being the only coach to lead his country to Olympic gold in both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball tournaments. He guided Brink and Reckermann to victory in 2012 before repeating the feat four years later with Ludwig and Walkenhorst.
