Thalassophobia wins Riverina championships

Narrandera trainer Jackson Painting continued his great recent success when his talented pacer Thalassophobia (Fear The Dragon) finished with a powerful burst on Friday evening to win the $75,000 TAB Regional Championship Final in Wagga.

Thalassophobia was driven by Brad Hewitt, who picked up a standby drive.

At a ferocious pace, La Cavalletta was ridden hard early by Cameron Hart to take the lead. Luke McCarthy, who had previously won a double earlier in the evening, settled behind the leader on View The Art.

THALASSOPHOBIA NOV 14 REPETITION

Thalassophobia was one zero in midfield. The question was whether La Cavalletta could continue. Tukaha tried to push through the field and Hewitt went wide with thalassophobia.

But on the home straight the race was run over wide terrain and in no time Thalassophobia took the lead and recorded a convincing victory over Tukaha and Mirador Lass, who finished in third place.

Painting has achieved success with Bogdanovic, Scared Stiff, Fear The Pain and Catchafire and a team of 20 people at work. He is ably assisted by locals Elli Lapper and Michaela Towers.

A jubilant painting featured after the race.

I really liked him as a child. I remember his mother Ocean Diva. I got him from his breeder Rick Woodhouse of Yirribee Stud. Thalassophobia was her first foal to race.

At home he was a difficult horse because he was a poor shadow jumper. Then he started having pain in his knees. So we gave him a good spell and now he is doing well.

He will now be ready for another final of the Riverina Championships to take place later.

Painting is a sharp assessment of a good horse. Thalassophobia’s mother Ocean Drive was indeed a top racing mare. She won more than 15 races for more than $250,000, with an overall best of 1.51.1

Tragically, she missed her first five attempts to foal before producing Thalassophobia. She has since produced five other offspring, including Happy Too Ya, who has won two races.
