Who remembers when Tesla promised that we would get a nice and affordable version of its supercars? Just me? Well, the only bit of affordability we’ll see is the Model Y Standard and the Model 3 Standard, both of which are making people’s heads spin. Okay, I want to focus on the Model Y standard now, especially since this Reddit thread fell into my lap and I’m down the rabbit hole. With this latest and most basic version, you get nice things in theory, but not completely nice. You’ll see what I say below. I promise.
Hold your horses, Tesla Model Y Standard is here…
So the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 both saw some interesting changes and news this past week. The Model Y gets a standard version, which essentially contains everything you would expect from a car, just with a less elegant twist. One Redditor posted a rant about how bad the SUV looked compared to the more expensive version, noting cheap-feeling materials, a locked sunroof, and FSD that isn’t possible (unless you spend another $8,000).
What the commenter is saying is, “I’d recommend anyone looking to buy a new Model Y right now to just spend the extra $5,000 or more to get the premium features, or if you’re on a budget, just wait a few years to get your hands on a used one for less than what this costs now.” I wholeheartedly agree, tbh. Why buy a car if it’s kinda crappy?
Quantity over quality?
You know the old saying: “quality over quantity.” Tesla switched gears and opted for quantity > quality instead. The design elements in the standard version feel lackluster, and thanks to one disgruntled Redditor, we have a front row seat to the clunkiness. The sealed sunroof and fabric cup holders would be enough to make me return the damn thing, as would the FSD $8,000 extra; I would take my money elsewhere. Just like most of us.
You’ll also want to remember that the Model Y Standard costs $39,990, so even at that MSRP there’s no reason to ditch the sunroof. Let me out!
