Terriers late goals stun Northeastern in Matthew Arena final

Earlier this week, Jay Parolfo said he didn’t have a favorite game at Matthews Arena during his playing days or as a coach. Maybe he has found a candidate.

Sophomore Kamil Bednarik And Brandon Svoboda
scored goals 18 seconds apart in the final two minutes to rally #20 BU past #11 Northeastern, 4-3, in the final game to be played at Matthews Arena. Or as Bernie Corbett calls the former Boston Arena, “the ancestral home of BU hockey.”

Despite holding a decisive lead in the game for much of the first forty minutes, the Terriers trailed 3–2 after setting up Northeastern’s third goal with just 1.x seconds left in the middle period.

Bednarik’s equalizer came with Mikhail Yegorov pulled for an extra skater and Svoboda’s game winner followed seconds later.

“It was a good hockey game,” Pandolfo said after the game. “We made a few mistakes, but our guys didn’t go down tonight. I really liked that. You just felt that we were going to try to find a way to tie it. I didn’t expect to win there right away, but we did it and it’s an honor for our group.”

“In the past you sometimes conceded a late goal after a power play, that could really hurt you,” he explained. “But our guys were determined to come back. It’s just a big win for us going into the semester
[break]Hopefully a confidence builder. I wish we played again tomorrow.”

The win gave the Terriers three key points in the conference standings and a victory over a ranked team that should improve BU’s NPI rankings. It also allows BU to finish the first semester at 9-8-1, with four wins in its last five games.

With the win, BU leaves The Arena with a 347-177-19 in games played in “the old barn.”

Pandolfo praised Svoboda’s two-goal performance. “At the beginning of the match he had two half breakaways. When he is like that he is very difficult to handle. He has a lot of speed. He is strong. He was really determined tonight.”

While the Terriers would hold a 16-8 lead in the opening period and a 13-6 advantage at the face-off spot, it was the Huskies who scored first, and also scored second. Midway through the period, with Northeastern on a power play, Giacomo Martino threw a pass from the left circle to the goalmouth, where Jacob Mathieu redirected it past Yegorov for a 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Gavin McCarthyHusky’s attempt to squeeze past the backboard failed and led to a 2-on-1 Husky break. Tyler Fukakusa finished the stretch, beating Yegorov top-shelf.

The home team had a 2-0 lead and with goalkeeper Lawton Zacher having the second-best GAA in Division 1 (1.97), BU’s prospects seemed bleak.

However, right after a Terrier power play kill, BU cut that lead in half on an offensive zone draw. Jonathan Morello pushed the p forward and Nick Roukounakis‘ shot attempt was deflected in the air. Svoboda reached the bouncing puck first and tipped it past Zacher on the stick side

In the middle period, BU killed a second NU power play without allowing a shot. The Huskies’ passive forecheck allowed entry into the zone, leading to several A opportunities. None of them connected until the game’s best play at 1:39 p.m

Sacha Boisvert carried the puck into the attacking zone, attracted two defensemen and dropped the puck back to Owen McLaughlin. He gave a pass to Malte Vass who was skating in the left circle. Meanwhile, Boisvert went to the NU net and Vass’ cross-ice pass set up Boisvert for a one-timer that went past the Zacher glove to make it two apiece. It was the second-year center’s second goal.

A Northeastern penalty at 5:43 gave BU a chance to take the lead. One shot from an acute angle hit iron and one Cole Hutson Unpleasant Cole Eisermanwhen I went to the net I just missed the connection. With seconds left in the period, Charlie TretheweY’s outlet pass to Boisvert in the BU zone was mishandled. The loose puck slid to BU foe Joe Connor, who quickly passed the ball behind Yegorov with 1.3 left on the clock.

Instead of taking the lead after two periods, BU found itself on the short end of a 3-2 score.

BU pressed for an equalizer and had possession and shot advantage in the third, killing another penalty without yielding a shot on goal. A third BU power play yielded three shots but no goals.

Midway through the period, a sharp call on the break resulted in a penalty shot for Connor, but Yegorov calmly stoned him.

With just over two minutes left in regulation time, BU pulled Yegorov for an extra skater. Bednarik won a puck battle along the left boards and sent it at the point to Hutson, who advanced the puck to McCarthy. The captain quickly set up Eiserman for a one-timer from the right circle that Zacher saved, but Bednarik, alone at the goalmouth, knocked home the rebound to tie the score at 18:03 with his fifth of the season.

Just 18 seconds later, BU took its first and only lead.

On the winning sequence, Trethewey beat Dylan Hrychowian for a loose puck in the Terriers defensive zone and knocked it along the boards to Roukounakis. The burly forward brought the puck into the neutral zone and as the bouncing disc crossed the Huskies’ blue line, Svoboda pressured Dylan Finlay. Keeping his feet moving, he gained control of the puck and as the defenseman hooked his right foot, he turned the puck past Zacher on the blocker’s side for a 4-3 lead. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Now it was Northeastern’s turn to pull the goalie for an extra skater. The Terriers handled the last 99 and a coach could get several clean sheets and not allow a shot on goal. Northeastern was limited to just four shots in the final period. The final shots were 35-21 BU. Terriers also had the lead at the face-off, 30-24.

While McLaughlin and Jack Murtagh returned the lineup, Sascha Boumedienne and Aiden Celebrini were ill and unable to play. Amico and Vass formed the third unit of the defensive corps tonight, while Trethewey was paired with Mick Frechette on the second unit.

“I thought the three freshmen did an excellent job,” Pandolfo said. “I thought it was a very good experience for Amico and Vass tonight, in this building, against a very good team. They did a good job. The play Vass made on Boisvert’s goal was a pretty high-quality play. That will give them some confidence.”
