It was a matter of inches and it was the difference between a come-from-behind, last-minute victory and a draw in extra time. Sascha Boumedienne‘s rocket from the left point with 44 seconds left in regulation appeared to give the #3 Terriers a 3-2 lead. However, Colgate’s challenge for offside when entering the previous zone was upheld and the goal was wiped out.
Instead, the Terriers, who had twice erased one-goal deficits, had to settle for a 2-2 overtime draw against a Colgate side that presented a significantly greater challenge than on Friday.
CHECK BACK FOR DEFKIT’S TERRIER TAKEAWAY
Game statistics could show that BU played a strong game, but ran into a nice goalkeeper. Terriers had the edge in shots, 35-25, and at the faceoff point, 37-24, and had more O-zone time. But head coach Jay Parolfo didn’t see it that way.
“Disappointed with our start.” he said. “They were ready to play. We didn’t. Yes, we went back in the second and third, but our habits were terrible. I think our guys wanted an easy night and they weren’t going to give it to us.”
Cole Hutson noted the disparity in the level of competition between the teams, pointing out: “No team likes to lose twice. We knew they were going to have it just as tough as the night before, but that match clearly meant a lot more to them.”
Freshman Jack Murtaghwho scored BU’s second goal, added: “We need a better start as a whole. We realized that in the second period, and we picked it up from there.”
From the beginning, BU’s effort was a far cry from Friday night’s sharp effort, on top of the opponent. Turnovers and dropped passes blunted the Terriers’ offense and created scoring opportunities for Colgate.
BU’s best chance came then Cole Eiserman collected a rebound and sent it through the crease behind the goalkeeper Andreas Takacswho wrote a strong game.
Mid-term, freshmen Charlie Trethewey had his pocket picked in the defensive zone by Max Nagel who skated into the left circle and then quickly found himself behind Ryan Sullivan for a shot past Mikhail Yegorov’s glove.
BU had two full power plays and a partial one in the period that yielded four shots and no goals.
Terriers nearly tied the score early in the period Brandon Svoboda put Murtagh in the slot, but Takacs saved with a glove. They tied it minutes later when Cole Eiserman disrupted a Colgate defender in the offensive zone. The puck went to Ritchie, creating a two-on-one between the circles. The freshman passed the puck back to Eiserman, who beat Takacs on the stick end for his fifth goal of the young season.

BU immediately had another power play opportunity, but was unable to convert it.
Colgate then regained the lead just two minutes into the third period Antonio Fernandes‘ shot from the point sailed past Yegorov, who appeared to be shielded by a BU defender. The lead lasted less than three minutes. Murtagh, who had been chasing pucks all night, broke up a play inside the Raiders blue line. He ran to the net and went forehand-backhand to beat Takacs for his first collegiate goal.

Terriers ran the game for most of the final 15 minutes of regulation, outscoring Colgate 11-5 in that period. Murtagh, Eiserman and Jack Harvey each had a pair of shots as BU appeared to take the lead. Boudmedienne’s explosion in the last minute caused a brief euphoria in the arena, after which the goal was disallowed.
A Kamil Bednarik The tripping penalty that limited BU’s scoring opportunities in overtime was negated and neither team was able to produce a game winner. The draw was the first in the 34 matches between the schools.
BU claimed the shootout when Eiserman and Harvey converted their shots while Colgate’s attempts to beat Yegorov failed. The 6-foot-2 Russian goalkeeper also had his net cleared in his only previous shootout experience, a 2-2 draw against UConn last season.
With all four Colgate power plays killed, BU is 13 of 14 on the PK, for a .928 success rate. Terriers failed to score a power play goal for the first time this season.
