Germany’s quarter-final victory over Argentina improves their record 7–4 at the event.
In the first match, Tomás Martín Etcheverry defeated by Argentina Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 7–6(3), 7–6(7) in a thrilling match that led to tie-breaks in both sets.
Struff had a 2-0 lead in the opening set and were in the lead until Etcheverry broke back in the eighth game for a total of four games. From there, the pair exchanged service games until the Argentinian triumphed in the tie-break 7-3.
There were no service breaks in the second set, creating another tiebreak. Etcheverry again came out on top, 9–7, to win the match.
Germany Alexander Zverevthe Olympic gold medalist of Tokyo 2020also won in straight sets against Argentina Francisco Cerundolo6–4, 7–6(3). It was a routine, if not runaway, victory for Zverev, the world No. 3, who broke in the sixth game of the first set to top the scoreboard.
He would then win the second set in a tie-break, 7–3, after neither player managed to break the other.
The Argentinian duo played in the last match of the day Andrés Molteni And Horacio Zeballos raced into a solid lead and took the first 6-4 in just 31 minutes.
But the Germans mate Kevin Krawietz And Tim Puetz answered back and won the second set 6-4. That pushed the match to a third set that would decide who advanced to the semifinals.
In the third set, both duos traded games back and forth. A tiebreak was needed to decide the match, with the Germans emerging victorious after a lengthy duel, 7-6 (12-10).
The Davis Cup Final 8 continues on Friday (November 21) with the semi-final between Italy and Belgium.
